I see so many people lamenting getting Covid after hanging out with friends...many of them are older people, some already have Long Covid and the setback often causes even more physical damage and disability. It doesn't have to be this way!
It's not a choice between total isolation or no Covid precautions. This attitude reminds me of people who couldn't fathom switching to condoms and getting HIV tests when AIDS emerged. I think of Covid mitigations as Safe Life. Or at least safer life than pretending Covid is over.
If you're going to gather, have all friends test first. When gathering, wear a well-fitting N95/KN95/Kf94 mask indoors and outdoors in crowds. If home, run Hepa air purifiers or a Corsi-Rosenthal box and open windows. If you share a meal together, eat outside and avoid crowds.

1/ ASHRAE (professional engineering org for HVAC professionals) has a technical committee on the design of educational facilities that has released new guidance on how schools can achieve “advanced indoor air quality.” @SuptDuran @jmayo443 @APSFacilities Priorities list from page 5 of report. Most other images in
2/ The complete report can be found here, but a 🧵 to sum up some of the ideas. APS falls very short on most of this, but its our hope that new buildings will be built with some basis of best practice and health — optimal conditions for learning.

3/ First, verify, test, and balance HVAC systems, including direct measurements from at least 10% of classrooms, at a minimum.

MINIMAL testing should include CO2 levels are being maintained at <750 ppm over outdoor air. Also levels for PM2.5 and toxic volatile organic compounds.

I'd had we need a culture change from within and from outside healthcare.

** Allowing exponential growth of disease is like jumping off a roof instead of taking the stairs. **

The danger seems to "sneak up" on ppl, but it shouldn't. This is just how exponents work. They are much MORE POWERFUL than linear patterns.
🧵1/
Speed is distance over time. It has a *linear* relationship to distance.

Gravity measures acceleration, the *increase* of speed. It has an *exponential* relationship to distance.
2/
Every stair you take from the roof to the ground accepts a tiny bit of gravity's acceleration. But then it's controlled right away, before exponential growth lets your speed get too great to control.

When you reach the ground, you've traveled the same (vertical) distance...

To @keithbaldrey,
Actually, COVID-aware *are* in step w/ science; it’s “if we have to live w/ this virus, let’s be smart about it instead of #LetItRip nonsense.”

Let’s look at the science, shall we? And about public opinion…let’s look at that too.

A thread 🧵…

@GlobalBC
2/ First, who are these people you deride as “COVID zero”? Many have good reason to seek out info to keep ourselves & others safe:
- front line workers
- caring professions (schools, LTC, hospitals)
- immunocompromised or live w/ someone who is
- have #LongCovid
- have empathy
3/ So, with the above motivations, COVID-aware looked for evidence to understand what the world is facing w/ this virus.

No 1 basic fact: #COVIDIsAirborne, but unfortunately political forces (incl 🇨🇦PH) deny & obfuscate that.

It’s a massive failure. Mario Possemai says it best:

“As the pandemic evolves, the failure of current public health policies now shines clearer than a midnight star. The assumption that hybrid immunity — vaccines combined with infections — would end COVID’s relentless evolution has fed the pandemic, not starved it”
“If getting infected, vaxxed, or vaxxed-plus-infected actually made us safe as COVID circulates, Canada wouldn’t be recording its highest death rate of nearly 20,000 this year.”

An evening deep dive of research into various respiratory viruses, and how long they are contagious for, led me to articles citing airborne transmission of Influenza, RSV and Rhinovirus…dating as far back as 1962.

nature.com/articles/19511…
The scale at which researchers have been able to study COVID in the past 3 years is perhaps none we’ve seen before. But the research, and evidence, has been there for decades.

pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/3039011/
“These results suggest that contrary to current opinion, rhinovirus transmission, at least in adults, occurs chiefly by the aerosol route.” (1987)

Rapid Antigen Testing, what you need to know. Read here:

What is different with Omicron and Rapid Antigen Test?
Swab BOTH throat and nose as per this video.
Make sure not to drink for 30 minutes prior to swabbing. Nova Scotians were early adopter of Rapid Antigen Testing, here is what they say. globalnews.ca/video/8530698/…
Test to "play" with Omicron: no symptoms and want to make sure not to infect the vulnerable person you are visiting, test immediately prior to your visit. Remember no test is 100% sensitive, always consider adding other layers of protection. #N95 #COVIDisAirborne #CleanTheAir

Possible scenarios for Omicron in AB if nothing is done.

We are at the nascent phase of new VOC spread (only 23 reported cases), when *a lot* can be done to effectively halt it or at least significantly slow it down.

Prevent more sparks from coming. Make the tinder less dry.
1/
Let's not do with Omicron what we did with Alpha and Delta. We don't need more deaths and suffering.

At this stage *preventing more importations* is essential.
Less fire starters --> smaller chance of a big fire

Travel Quarantine. Test. Vaccinate.
2/
Make the tinder less dry:

3rd doses, vaccinate kids, #FreeTheRATs, deploy airborne precautions (N95 for all, ventilation, CO2 monitors, HEPA air purifiers, education about airborne transmission)

Prevent super-spreading:
Caps on public & business gathering's sizes

1/ Risk reduction in a room that has at least 5 air changes per hour. @APSVirginia, another study shows how layered mitigations work. We need to add True HEPAS to rooms *now* to #CleanTheAir, and boost filtration, because #DeltaVariant is far more infectious.
2/ The blue line👆 is where most APS rooms are, if not WORSE for about 1/3 of our rooms. APS chose the most minimal goal it could (4 ACH). We haven’t prioritized providing the same BETTER 6ACH ventilation for all kids.

@APSVaSchoolBd, please ask for #6ACHforAll & #AirEquity!
3/ APS’ ionizers produce 20% less extra clean air, so they’ve underestimated ventilation.

They’ve doubled capacity, which means now 1/2 the clean air for each student returning to school in a week, against #DeltaVariant, which is 2x more infectious.
