Amid all the hustle and bustle, it's hard to keep track of what actually happened yesterday in Brussels. Here are some takeaways from the diplomatic showdown (NATO, G7, EUCO) including @POTUS attendance & @ZelenskyyUa speeches. A 🧵 /1
First, HR news: @CharlesMichel was re-elected EUCO President for another 2,5 years; @jensstoltenberg's mandate was extended by a year as NATO Secretary-General. /2 politico.eu/article/charle…
Second, NATO news: NATO agreed on 4 new battlegroups on its "Eastern flank". In total, 40,000 soldiers stationed next to the border. More resources will be spent to prevent cyberattacks & to prepare for potential biological & chemical attacks./3 nato.int/cps/en/natohq/…

Blue hydrogen is currently discussed as a bridging technology. In our opinion, it is not sustainable due to residual GHG emissions, insufficient short-term #CCS capacity and the risk of #fossil infrastructure lock-in. Therefore, it should not receive public subsidies.
Stringent certification is necessary to minimize the environmental footprint and social issues of hydrogen. This is both true for imports and European production.
An additionality criterion for renewables can ensure that green hydrogen does indeed reduce carbon emissions.

Hydrogen is one lever for #climateneutrality in areas which are challenging to electrify. But where does #H2 research stand currently & what new findings are available? With our new impulse "12 Insights on #Hydrogen" we shed light on the subject. 🧵 👇 1/8
Finding 1: By 2050, carbon-free #H2 provides 1/5 of world's final energy, mainly made from renewable electricity. H2 should first decarbonize industry, shipping, aviation + consolidate a #greenenergy system. H2 infrastructure should meet need of industry, ports & power grids. 2/8
Finding 2: Financing #greenH2 in no-regret applications (industry, power, shipping, aviation) needs additional policy support since #carbonprice will remain insufficient over the next decade. No credible financing strategy for introducing green #H2 in #households. 3/8
With the #SofiaDeclaration, the 6 #WesternBalkans countries have committed to #climateneutrality in 2050. To achieve this, a #lignite phase-out for power production is needed, ideally by 2040. To support the debate, we have developed 6 pathways (THREAD). #EUGreenDeal 1/12
Where do we stand today? WB-6 power markets consist almost exclusively of two generation technologies: #lignite and #hydro. The share of either source varies considerably between the countries. 2/12
Finding 1: 90 % of #lignite power plants in the #westernbalkans was put into operation 30 or more years ago. 40 % of the capacities are older than 40 years. The power plant park is in urgent need of #modernisation. 3/12

GWP* vs GWP100 better describes how #methane emissions impact the climate. Using GWP100 overestimates the warming impact of constant CH4 emissions by 3-4 times.

Why is GWP* important? From the paper: GWP* emphasizes CH4 reductions can only contribute meaningfully to limiting climate change, as long as CO2 hits net-zero.

Ahead of crucial #COP26 & amid intensifying climate crisis, the @EU_ Commission today presents the #FitFor55 package aiming at cutting EU emissions by 55% by 2030. Implementation will require far-reaching changes in mobility, housing, land use, industrial production. 1/11
The @EU_Commission sends the following signal to the international community: EU ups the ante to align the block on the 1.5° pathway, as pledged in the #ParisAgreement. #Fitfor55 will show whether the EU is ready to walk the climate talk while ensuring a just transition. 2/11
The walk will only be fully successful if environmental integrity and social and distributional justice go hand in hand. Agora welcomes the setting up of a social fund to ensure that its #Fitfor55 proposals lead to greater social solidarity. 3/11
