Last Friday I took part in a panel on " Deep Tech investing for the non technical" alongside impact investor @mayaghosnb, fellow deep tech investor @FaridHaque, @VAUBANDOTIO founder @ulricmusset and IoT founder @SyedAhmed

Here are 3 points that emerged from the discussion
👇🧵
@mayaghosnb @FaridHaque @VAUBANDOTIO @ulricmusset @SyedAhmed 1. OPPORTUNITY: Deep Tech has the potential to accommodate a lot more funding in Europe & will allow investors to participate in the 3rd wave of tech infrastructure innovation -after the original VC silicon wave of the 60s/70s & the Cloud infra wave post dot-com burst
@mayaghosnb @FaridHaque @VAUBANDOTIO @ulricmusset @SyedAhmed 2. RISK: But! If you are indeed non technical, you should probably NOT jump straight in. Real deep tech means advanced computer science, hardware and fields requiring the understanding of complex R&D risks:

🤩 Action is gearing up on climate change, and investment in #climatetech has grown to stunning new heights.

My new report with @PwC looks at market trends and where there’s untapped potential for investors and policymakers. 🧵 1/8
🤪 The market is hot. Year-on-year growth in climate tech investment is 210%, with more than $60bn invested in startups in H1 2021 alone. 14¢ of every VC dollar is now invested in climate tech.

We’re now tracking 3000+ active climate tech startups.
2/8
📈 Megadeals are on the rise, and driving much of this recent growth. The average deal size in H1 2021 is now $96m, nearly quadruple the US$27m it was one year prior. 3/8

We've now talked to over 100 #climate #startup #founders for @enduring_planet and we're seeing a pattern. A 🧵
(1) First and foremost, there is incredible innovation happening in the space. The pace at which new #climatetech is entering the market and getting validation is staggering. We are truly at the early days of a New Climate Economy. I AM SO EXCITED 🍿🚀
(2) unfortunately, most #founders in #climatetech don't think holistically about the capital they're raising to finance their businesses. The vast majority (over 90%) are going exclusively after VC, without considering non-dilutive options

This was what I worried would happen with @Booker4KY. Not be on the offensive with @RandPaul, who's an abysmal, but only on the defensive when need to. Just like the @KyDems always do, which is a losing strategy. But Booker's running on policies that are materially popular!!!
Here's a fun fact about running in an election... If you run as an Aggressive & Offensive Candidate with Policies that help the People & their Material Well-being, then you win.
Here's how I know; In the 2015 Midterms, @AlanGrayson of the @FlaDems, he won with no problem. He was unapologetic when being a "#Progressive", stands up with his Principles & goes for the Jugular in Political Ads at his Opponents on how their Policies are Wrong, Evil & Bad &...

Thread on new @CFTC #climaterisk report. Here are the highlights: First & perhaps most importantly, this report was a) commissioned by a majority-Republican federal regulatory agency and b) represents the consensus views of banks, investors, big companies, academics & enviros 1/
2/ Topline message: "US financial regulators must recognize that climate change poses serious emerging risks to the US financial system, and they should move urgently and decisively to measure, understand, and address these risks." Full report here (PDF): cftc.gov/sites/default/…
3/ Notably, the CFTC #climaterisk report does not just make recommendations to the CFTC, and is not limited by the jurisdiction of this agency (commodities, derivatives markets, etc). Also notable: the recommendations aren't binding. If Biden wins, they'll be a blueprint at best.

The state of climate 🌍 tipping points — sobering yet essential piece by @owengaffney @jrockstrom @AlexSteffen @KRichardsonC in @nature

#ClimateChange #ClimateEmergency #ClimateTech

nature.com/articles/d4158…
« Two decades ago [tipping points] were considered likely only if global warming exceeded 5 °C [...] IPCC Special Reports suggest that tipping points could be exceeded even between 1 and 2 °C of warming »
« Remaining emissions budget for a 50:50 chance of staying within 1.5 °C of warming is only about 500 Gt of CO2. Permafrost emissions could take an estimated 20% (100 Gt CO2) off (...) and that’s without including methane from deep permafrost or undersea hydrates. » (...)
