.@ewarren:"The fossil fuel industry... want[s] to be able to stir up a lot of controversy around lightbulbs, around your straws, and around your cheeseburgers when 70% of the pollution of the carbon that we're throwing into the air comes from 3 industries."
Sen. @ewarren: "We can't just think from the Canadian border down to the border with Mexico, we have to think about the whole world." #ClimateTownHall
.@ewarren:"By 2028, we don't have any more new building that has any carbon footprint. By 2030, we do the same thing on vehicles, on our cars and light duty trucks. And by 2035, we do the same thing with electric generation. That'll cut 70% of the carbon."

Takeaway en route up 10th Ave back home from the #ClimateTownHall: What struck me most was the level of sophistication and ambition of all the candidates —at least the ones I was in the room for (Biden through Booker). /1
They all talked about climate as an existential threat and one that needed to be a priority for their administration and most explicitly mentioned a goal of 100% clean/net zero by 2050 or sooner. /2
And several made the connections between climate & the economy, climate & jobs, climate & foreign policy, climate & national security, climate & justice, even climate & immigration — the myriad ways that climate is crucial to all of the key issues of this or any campaign. /3

And cue the Biden, Bernie and Harris stans who didn't like my rankings.
If you think Biden did as well as anyone else, he did not. Harris edged out Bernie specifically by addressing environmental racism & not treating audience members dismissively. Warren checked all the boxes.
I thought Bernie was very good--if you are actually following my live-tweeting you can see that. But Warren and Harris were better, specifically because they both relate better to actual humans, which matters. And their plans are doable AND progressive.

Yang had some radical ideas that were interesting. Klobuchar was solidly pragmatic. She was the centrist star. Biden sat, rarely finished a sentence, told stories about his past and got coached repeatedly by Cooper. No clear plan, no good reason to be anti-GND.

Apparently @andersoncooper #ClimateTownHall just cited my & @NaomiOreskes's peer-reviewed study showing how #ExxonKnew about the global warming dangers of its products decades ago, then turned around & orchestrated a massive disinformation campaign to mislead the public. THREAD.
2/n: First, it's pretty surreal (& brilliant!) to have @CNN suddenly covering the s*** out of the climate crisis, helping to #EndClimateSilence. Less fantastic is that it's behind a pay wall, meaning many of us (including moi) can't actually watch it.
3/n: Second, & even more surreal: Who could've imagined presidential candidates in any previous election out-bidding one another to call out the fossil fuel industry as a bad actor that must be held legally, financially, & socially accountable for their climate denial & damages?

They sound like every tinpot dictator in history. And sadly I can imagine many suburban moms nodding in ignorant, compliant agreement
Trump should demand that his Dem opponents only travel, work and campaign on a fossil-fuel free platform

We are now entering hour 2 of 7 of CNN's #ClimateTownHall. Next up: Amy Klobuchar. Check out @grist's live coverage, and follow this thread for tweets. grist.org/article/live-w…
@grist Klobuchar with the jokes! Day one. rejoin Paris. Day 2. Bring back the Clean Power Plan. Day 3. Reinstate Obama’s fuel efficiency standards for vehicles. “On day seven you’re supposed to rest but I don’t think I’m going to do that.” #ClimateTownHall
@grist I saw what happens when the mines close down and things change. You have to make sure you have the funding so people will be employed, Klobuchar says. Then pivots to environmental justice.

Julian Castro is up first @CNN's #ClimateTownHall. Question from the audience about homes and flood insurance after natural disasters. Check out Grist's latest cover story on this topic: grist.org/article/buyout…
@CNN Good on Castro for linking environmental justice to his statements on what he would do shore up the national flood insurance program. Next question is about how he would hold corporations accountable for their contributions to climate change.
@CNN Pretty jarring to hear these candidates give answers to these crucial questions without getting interrupted by moderators/other candidates. Can't believe my ears! Castro just discussed the role of courts in holding polluters accountable for a good two minutes.

Tonight on the @CNN #climateforum, Democratic candidates will talk through their plans to rapidly transition our country to clean energy. We’re guessing we’ll hear a lot about #renewables & carbon pricing. But what will they say about #nuclear energy?

#DemDebates
Will they mention that it’s the largest source of carbon free electricity in the US?

#climateforum @wolfblitzer @ErinBurnett @andersoncooper @ChrisCuomo @DonLemon
thx:@GovNuclear
Will anyone point out that, considering the scale of the challenge, we should get rid of fossil fuels before even thinking about getting rid of nuclear?
