1. RJNB is pleased with the government's decision to fund this research project.
We agree that this funding does not solve the systemic issues that forced #SaveClinic554 to close most of its services...

2. ...and we are frustrated that we, and many others, have poured countless hours of protest & advocacy into trying to move the provincial government to #Axe8420 and #FundClinicAbortions.
3. The federal grant will not fund the medical services that #Clinic554 provided. But it provides funding to properly research & document abortion barriers in New Brunswick, a province that stubbornly clings to a practice of state misogyny, not least by restricting abortion.

“I will not go home at night feeling that there has been another degradation to our society in New Brunswick.”

- Blaine Higgs, speaking to a motion in the House on Dec. 18, 2014 re: abortion access in NB

So, Higgs said increased abortion access would degrade our society.
I feel the loss of Clinic 554, which is a family practice with a focus on reproductive, trans*, LGBT/Queer, and HIV care, is a degradation of our society. Successive governments have refused to properly fund reproductive healthcare in NB, resulting in the closure of #Clinic554.
All @premierbhiggs needs to do is make a minor change to General Regulation - Medical Services Payment Act. Remove Schedule 2 (a.1) of Regulation 84-20 which prevents coverage for just one type of service.

Curious about the closure of Clinic 554 in Fredericton, New Brunswick? A thread: #Clinic554 #nbpoli
Clinic 554 is not an abortion clinic, as news implies. It's Private Health Care—expensive—and wants Medicare coverage. It covers transsexual/transgender health care, and also family health care, including abortions paid out-of-pocket. #Clinic554 #nbpoli

And if abortions are the only service keeping a Transgender health clinic open, there are bigger questions to be asked. #Clinic554 #nbpoli

.@CBCNB's election night coverage is underway.

We'll be tweeting out periodic updates as the evening progresses.

Polls have now closed across New Brunswick.

Reminder: A single party needs 25 seats to form a majority.

.@poitrasCBC is explaining how we got here:

2018 minority; resignation of a PC minister over closing rural ERs; COVID19 unity; Higgs attempts a power grab through all party talks; Higgs calls a snap election in the name of "stability".

#NBvotes2020 #SaveClinic554
Super early lead for the PCs.

On air discussion over whether Higgs has done enough to sway Francophone New Brunswickers, especially in northern NB.

#Abortion became illegal in Canada when we adopted the Criminal Code from the British (which they never implemented). This happened in 1892. Contraceptives were also prohibited. Regardless of the law, people still had abortions. #cdnpoli
In 1969, Pierre Trudeau’s gov’t allowed abortions within a hospital only if a committee of doctors determined that the pregnancy threatened the life or health of the pregnant person. Access varied. (Language was not gender neutral, adapted for this account).
In that same year Dr Morgentaler opens an abortion clinic. He is charged under the CCC in 1970.

In light of the decades-long confusion over what is now called #Clinic554, “private clinics” and #AccessToAbortion in Atlantic Canada, here’s my thread. I provide abortion care now from a hospital-located clinic in NS, but years ago I escorted at Clinic 554 (then Morgentaler). 1/
Abortion was completely decriminalized in Canada in 1988. Since then, barriers are largely about affordability & accessibility (mainly due to few willing providers & the giant geography of Canada). Approval of Mifegymiso in 2017, prescribable by any FP/NP, improved access tons 2/
But medical abortion is not a panacea. If you are beyond 9 or so weeks, not safe to or comfortable miscarrying at home, and can’t access surgical back up if it fails, you might not want to choose Mifegymiso. We still need surgical abortion. It’s quick and very safe. 3/

THE CURRENT RULES CONCERNING ABORTION IN NEW BRUNSWICK! NOTE THE ASTERISKS' (also some thoughts on things...)

2/7 -Mifegymiso, "the abortion pill", is available under medicare*
- You do not need the permission of any doctor to receive a surgical abortion**
3/7 *Mifegymiso is only available with a prescription. In SJ, Moncton and Fredericton you can get this at a sexual health clinic rather than a GP. If you live in a small community with no sexual health clinic, with a conservative doctor, you're fucked.

This #NewBrunswickDay let's acknowledge the ways in which this province fails BIPOC, LGBTQIA2S+ & other marginalized communities. There is yet to be a public inquiry into the deaths of Chantel Moore & Rodney Levi, not to mention a broader inquiry into systemic racism in NB.
New Brunswick is about to lose #Clinic554 because @Gov_NB is openly defying the Canada Health Act by refusing to fund abortions there. Not only will this impact those seeking abortions and trans patients of the clinic, but many New Brunswickers will be losing their family doctor.
In Fredericton alone, there are more than 15,000 patients on a waiting list for family doctors. The city lost 4 family doctors last week, not including Dr. Edgar from Clinic 554. Across NB, there are 36,928 patients waiting for a family doctor.
