What’s #CoEpi (@CoEpiApp) open source project been up to lately? A thread with some updates & frequently asked questions we’re seeing as there is growing awareness of the options of Bluetooth-based technology to support our fight against #COVID19 (+other transmissible illnesses).
If you’re not familiar with #CoEpi (@CoEpiApp), it’s an app for iOS and Android designed to use open source Bluetooth technology to anonymously log interactions with other devices and anonymously share symptoms to alert others. Image
How will this work?

First, #CoEpi @CoEpiApp does not have any user-identifiable information. No profile, no name, no username, no picture, etc. The app on the phone only has a randomly generated number that rotates every so often.

What’s the latest on #CoEpi (@CoEpiApp) and what do we think about the latest @Apple and @Google announcement?

THREAD:
Today, @Apple and @Google announced they would release APIs that enable interoperability between Android and iOS devices using apps from public health authorities.
This is great news. @CoEpiApp, & other apps working in this space, have been working to build new Bluetooth libraries to enable phones to anonymously detect and log interactions with each other, regardless of whether those interactions are iOS-iOS, Android-Android, or iOS-Android.

Time flies when you’re staying at home 7 days a week and working on an open source project! Here’s the latest on #CoEpi:
Reminder: the #CoEpi team is building a privacy-first system for anonymous Bluetooth-based contact tracing / exposure matching based on voluntary symptom sharing and/or confirmed COVID-19 test results.

(See CoEpi.org/vision for more details)
Our focus:

Communities of close contacts can begin protecting themselves with #CoEpi immediately; there is no scale required to achieve benefit to closed user groups (e.g. you and your family and friends).

#CoEpi update - in the past week, the group has made good progress on Bluetooth and back-end development as well as further developing content and workflows for the app.
What will #CoEpi be? A mobile app-for both iOS & Android- with Bluetooth detection of nearby devices to help you identify contact with those who may have transmissible illnesses. It's designed with privacy in mind: only share symptoms if you want.See more: CoEpi.org
Our current biggest #CoEpi needs are more people who have ReactNative mobile dev experience or skills on backend (specifically: rails/postgres/heroku experience), that want to contribute at #WeAreNotWaiting speed to an open source project. If that’s you, please reach out!

Here's a list of questions and responses (some existing threads, some new info to Twitter) about what I've been being asked by friends and family about what I've been doing and what they've should be thinking about doing re: #COVID19 protection measures.

Thread:
Q: Are you still social distancing?

A: Yes. I'm on day 21 of social distancing. No restaurants, no seeing family unless we are out in the fresh air separated by 6+ feet with no contact. No other contact other than @scottleibrand.

Details here:
Note: if you social distance for ~14 days & do not have symptoms, that makes your bubble safe. If someone or some other household is also equally stringent & develops a safe bubble, those bubbles can then interact. So you can buddy up if people are willing to take equal measures.

The #CoEpi group has been hard at work over the last week on #CoEpi: we have folks working on backend development, MVP (prototype) development, and both UX and front-end development for our full version of #CoEpi (see vision at CoEpi.org)
#CoEpi will be an app that prompts useful, relevant notifications (such as washing hands after changing locations), and helps you track & alert - if you want - your loved ones about symptoms of a contagious illness, or alert you if you might have been exposed by a close contact.
How can you help with #CoEpi? If you’re a mobile developer (Android, iOS, or #ReactNative), please reach out. We can also use help with backend development. But if that’s not your skillset, sign up to be an early tester here: forms.gle/KRaBNx8YfpvqZB…

Yay - this is the type of analysis I've been hoping to see, to help me better understand individual #COVID19 risk.

Note: previously we've only had access to comorbidity data around death (CFR). This data is hospitalization, ventilation, or death combined.
BUT, even with those combined, this is showing a hazard ratio for diabetes that you can apply to your age group risk to better understand your individual risk.
The tweet shows the overall risk for one comorbidity is 1.79. The article says the diabetes risk (of all three things combined) is 1.59.

That's huge, compared to the CFR of diabetes generally being reported at 7.3% (whereas my age group is 0.2%).

I’ve been personally watching the information about #COVID19 for over a month and a half, and expecting it to come to my doorstep. It’s now here, as predicted, so I wanted to share some of what I’m personally able to choose to do & why, with regards to individual protection.
First: why discuss individual protection? I am living with type 1 diabetes (although I am in low-risk age group (CFR 0.2%)). Diabetes is CFR of 7.3%. While that may be heavily skewed by age, and also includes T2D, it is logical that risk with T1D is higher for every age group.
(Side note - I’m keenly interested in getting breakdown of comorbidity CFR data for #COVID19 by age group, as are many other people - so if you find a source for that, please do share! It will be quite useful for assessing individual risk.)

ICYMI - we shared ideas earlier this week we called “CoEpi” for a community-based project to help track symptoms and spread of transmissible illnesses, and better inform individuals about their personal level of risk of things like #COVID19 or flu.
In the resulting discussions around the idea, we ran into @hamish_rodda who had a similar idea he was calling “FluSmart”. So we joined forces!

Together along with other individuals in the community (including @Rahatcodes), we’ve begun to build the prototype of #CoEpi.
We’ve also continued to work on our ideas and have added some other features to the development roadmap in the future with regards to useful, context-driven (and location-change-driven) prompts for handwashing and future data integration (e.g. temperature monitoring).
