In such landscapes, a combination of local survival and #colonization of empty habitat patches is key to species' regional persistence.

My new article just out @ForeignAffairs argues that the #US and #China are not directly competing for #SoftPower. Instead, what we are witnessing is #coexistence of their distinct approaches and practices. foreignaffairs.com/articles/china… 1/10
First, I contrast the more ideational or ideological #SoftPower conception and practice by the #US with the more #pragmatic approach of #China. The #US emphasizes liberal values, whereas #China stresses material welfare and mutual development as part of its vision. 2/10
The #US public diplomacy celebrates and promotes idealized vision of #American democracy. #China promotes its economic accomplishments and fuses practical benefits with cultural programming. This distinction is especially notable in the #GlobalSouth. 3/10

In addition to conducting the #science underpinning evidence-based #conservation tools, Taronga also supports their roll out. For example, Taronga supports a #carnivore #coexistence officer, Tshepo Ditlhabang, on @BPCTrust’s “Re Mmôgô” project in #Botswana #ScienceWeek
This #coexistence officer provides the community with access to evidence-based #HWC mitigation tools, including eye-cow, and is working to provide protective livestock collars, and flashing lights (#lionlights) at overnight enclosures.
While deterring hungry #carnivores, flashing lights also deter #elephants, themselves a major cause of #HWC but also a vital part of the ecosystem. Research led by @TempeAdams at Elephants without borders showed lights deterred field incursions doi.org/10.1017/S00306…

By hijacking a common anti-predator signal and applying it in a novel context in #Botswana, the team were able to reduce livestock losses to #lions. nature.com/articles/s4200… PC: Bobby-Jo Vial.
