Today's review by @ILGAEurope has found that the progress of LGBTQ+ rights in Europe and Central Asia has slowed down over the past year - and in some areas, regressed. ilga-europe.org/annualreview/2…

We've taken a closer look at their findings on the situation in the UK 🧵⬇️
Reports of anti-LGBTQ+ hate crime increased across England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland in 2021.

This comes alongside a rise in anti-trans rhetoric in politics, online, and in the press, with mainstream UK newspapers running one or more anti-trans articles every day.
The UK Government is lagging behind on legislation that would protect LGBTQ+ people from harm - particularly with the delays to #BanConversionTherapy, despite other European countries finalising bans with no exemptions or loopholes.

🚨URGENT🚨

Progress on trans equality in the UK is under threat.

Misinformation continues to spread, so we wanted to share some stats that show what life is like for trans people right now. Please read & share 👇
There are lots of trans people who are accepted and embraced by their family, friends and at school or work. Which is wonderful and this needs to be the norm for every trans person. But sadly, we know that’s not the case for everyone.
Abuse and discrimination is a near daily experience for many trans people. Two in five trans people (41%) have experienced a hate crime in the last year, and two-thirds of trans young people (64%) are bullied in school just for being who they are.

You may have seen some misleading stories about trans people in the media recently. When one group, whether it's trans, lesbian, gay or bi people, are portrayed as deviants, it prevents progress for everyone. Let’s clarify a few things🧵👇 #ComeOutForTransEquality #TransAllyScot
1) The only thing the Gender Recognition Act covers is how trans people’s birth certificates are changed, which improves the level of privacy they are entitled to, such as when getting a job or marrying, and how they are recognised after death. That’s all.
2) Then, what are we campaigning for? Currently the process is stressful, dehumanising and can be traumatic for trans people. While it was groundbreaking back in 2004, it’s outdated now.

Ask yourself what it means to live, for instance, ‘as a woman’. Lots of women like to wear jeans or trousers, go to football matches, drink pints, work in manual jobs etc. But trans women worry that these things will make them seem too masculine to judges.
If you are turned down by the judging panel, there is no right of appeal.
If you live in England or Wales and you’re married, your spouse can veto your gender being recognised. This is particularly problematic in relationships where there is domestic abuse, which trans people are additionally vulnerable to due to low self esteem.

Had a call from a friend tonight asking if we're ok. The truth is no. Trying to hold down a busy full time job, our kids, a relationship, the school run, late nights early mornings -normal busy life PLUS, another world of advocacy, research, writing, campaigns. Its exhausting 1/
On top of this is run of the mill low level transphobia that's been bubbling under the surface for years and then a new, specific, targeted campaign of transphobic hate, aimed at a tiny, vulnerable group. Many of us are fighting, but there is no breathing space, no contingency 2/
This means when stuff comes up, even normal, run of the mill, life stuff, it knocks you down. Like if you get an injury - as happened to me last year, or one of the kids is sick, (all the time), or if you hit a snag at work, or in your social life, this hits hard 3/
