Itโ€™s a lovely Saturday night here in the UK and Iโ€™m really looking forward to chatting with you all! Iโ€™m a 1st year PhD student and space historian (pretty cool job title), here to share why and how we go about making sense of the past.
Over the next week Iโ€™ll be talking about what space history is and why we should care, research under lockdown, and maybe even what my research is showing ๐Ÿ‘€ but first of all I want to hear from you!

What first got you really excited about space?
And what space-related stuff have you been getting excited about recently?

Personally Iโ€™m still over the moon at having seen #cometNEOWISE. It looks like trying to see the comet has gotten a lot more people interested in space and astronomy, too.

Comet NEOWISE is putting on a spectacular show right now!

Hereโ€™s a great graphic by @AdlerPlanet as to where the comet will be just 30 mins after sunset ๐ŸŒ‡
It is best viewed

- in clear-ish skies.. avoid clouds and fog! Check out the picture below!

- in dark skies.. go north of the city/town to avoid light pollution!

Loads of you have asked me about how I planned the image with the comet using stellarium, @photopills and google maps, so here goes a thread describing briefly each step. I hope you enjoy it ๐Ÿ‘‡๐Ÿผ
1.- in stellarium go to configuration, plugins-> Solar System Editor.
Hit configure & select comets and download lost of objects. Here you can select from the drop down menu or put the URL of the minor planet database website.
Finally, import all the orbital elements ๐Ÿ‘‡๐Ÿผ
2.- This will update existing comets and add new ones like #cometNEOWISE.
Now that you have it in Stellarium, search for it using its real technical name: C/2020 F3 ๐Ÿ‘‡๐Ÿผ

#cometNEOWISE, viewed from @Angeles_NF this morning. Image
Was hoping my fast 10โ€ f/3.9 Newtonian would pull out more faint detail in the tail, but it was swamped by pre-dawn light. #cometNEOWISE is getting very close to the sun now. Hope this thing lights up on its way out next week. Iโ€™ll go wide field next time. ๐Ÿ”ญ๐Ÿ’ซ
Was treated to this spectacular pre-dawn view of #DTLA and the LA basin on my way back down Angeles Crest Image

I got incredibly lucky: with a rare morning with no fog in San Francisco, I was able to photograph Comet #NEOWISE from the Golden Gate Bridge

It peaks today at Magnitude +1 brightness and will be visible to the naked eye for the next week.

You donโ€™t need a DSLR or telescope to see Comet #NEOWISE.

Although I used a DSLR, you can see it with the naked eye, and capture a photo with your iPhone (see below - a 3 second exposure!)

Go check it out this week! Low to the north-east horizon from 4-5AM before sunrise. ImageImage
