Welcome to Day 39 #CrossBorderRail - Poprad to Bratislava, via Krakow, Bohumín and Wien twitter.com/i/broadcasts/1…
Sod. Just broke the plastic rim that keeps the chain in place when the Birdy bike is folded. Had to jog, pushing the bike, to the station. I’ll have to find a way to fix it en route later!

#CrossBorderRail Day 13 - welcome to today’s thread twitter.com/i/broadcasts/1…
Europe’s top cross border regional network apparently
It’s still a grim SUV. Whatever powers it

Ok here we go. Berlin Hermannstrasse S-Bahn. Trains are disrupted. But I should still get to Spandau in time for my ICE.
Here’s today’s route map

Back on 17th February I coordinated an open letter about the lack of trains to @kaunas2022 European Capital of Culture

The letter is here 👇
kaunas.trainsforeurope.eu
We wrote to railway companies

PV from 🇱🇻 replied, saying there was nothing they could do. Polregio 🇵🇱 replied, but we still don't know exactly when they will run the Bialystok-Kaunas train. @RailBaltica replied saying they would keep an eye on everything
But the absolute deafening silence... was from the politicians we contacted

European Commissioners
@AdinaValean (for Transport)
and
@GabrielMariya (for Culture)
were recipients

And we have heard nothing from either

I checked - the letter did arrive by email

Let's do a little check, shall we?

@albertowmazzola was happy to tell me the other week that Skyscanner for Rail tools exist in Europe

And @CER_railways has trumpeted the need for ticketing platforms in #EUYearOfRail and on #ConnectingEurope Express

A quick 🧵
Were I to want to travel between Tourcoing (in France at the border to Belgium) to Lyon, tomorrow, where can I find the details of the only direct train there is?

Oh, and of course it's a train run by SNCF, member organisation of @CER_railways 👏
That train is a OUIGO low cost TGV

✅ Here is is on the OUIGO site 👇

Today has been such a weird mix of different things I'm not quite sure how to process it all...

And indeed I'm going to need time to actually properly edit my photos and videos from the #ConnectingEurope express

But for now... Some random bits and pieces
And some more

Doesn't the colour of the... err... coal wagon match the #ConnectingEurope Express perfectly?
Ostrava is slightly strange but great. And a Škoda tram, and the SNCF conference carriage

Right, so my webinars for the day are done

Now I can concentrate on #ConnectingEurope Express

The first part of the route today is Kraków Glowny 🇵🇱 to Ostrava 🇨🇿

Here's the route, thanks to Open Railway Map - line speeds shown!
Leaving Kraków north westbound on the mainline towards Katowice - renovations almost done here, but the speed is still just vMax 120 (confirmed with my GPS!) but I assume will be increased soon

West through Zabierzów ImageImage
At Trzebina, branch south towards Chrzanów - this is not the route the regular EuroCity to Ostrava takes

The line is being upgraded right now, and at the moment the line speed here is not more than 50 km/h Image

Soooo take a deep breath

How do you book a Berlin-Kraków rail ticket?

A #ConnectingEurope thread... Or, more precisely, a #DisconnectedEurope thread!
There are 2 direct Berlin-Kraków trains a day

EuroCity EC 57
Berlin Hbf D: 10:37
Krakow Glowny A: 17:55

EuroNight EN 50457
Berlin Hbf D: 18:43
Krakow Glowny A: 04:08

I couldn't take the EuroCity because of a work contract this morning, and the EuroNight arrives at 4am. No!
So I need to change somewhere...

DB gave me this option - with 5 minutes to change in Poznan Glowny! 🤯

This one goes via Wroclaw, but look at the timetable! The InterCity stops 22 minutes there... Bizarre

That train is a PKP InterCity, like this:

So tomorrow 22 Sept my #ConnectingEurope express trip starts...

And because I am not a hypocrite I am going to and from the train itself... by train
22 Sept
Normal trains
Berlin 🇩🇪 - Poznan 🇵🇱 - Kraków 🇵🇱 (9 hrs)

23 Sept
#ConnectingEurope Express
Kraków 🇵🇱 - Ostrava 🇨🇿 (stops there 5 hours) - then 🌙 overnight to Ljublana 🇸🇮, arriving 24 Sept (3.5 + 11 hrs)

24 Sept
Normal train
Ljubljana 🇸🇮 - Villach 🇦🇹
(1.5 hrs)
25 Sept
Normal trains
Villach 🇦🇹 - Linz 🇦🇹 - Praha 🇨🇿 - Berlin 🇩🇪 (13.5 hrs - I wanted a scenic route!)

Between 13:00 22 Sept and 21:00 25 Sept...

Over 38 hours train travel in an 80 hour period! Even by my standards that's a bit mad

So...

I am trying to sort out a Ljubljana - Berlin train trip end of September, and want to do it Ljubljana - Villach, stay the night there, then continue north the following day

The best bet: a💺on EN 40414

But how?
Deutsche Bahn tells me that EN 40414 runs every day, and that it has seats in 2nd class

D. 21:10 Ljubljana
A. 22:49 Villach Hbf
Vagonweb confirms this - 3 seating carriages as far as Villach at least, one of them just Zagreb-Villach Hbf

For some time I have been annoyed there is no discernible strategy for 🇪🇺-wide cross border rail
jonworth.eu/long-distance-…

I am not sure I have all the answers yet... but I think I am starting to get there

Short 🧵
First, an idea I first floated on my blog - that the EU ought to procure a pool of night trains - I have now developed into the @TrainsForEurope campaign

Original blog post from September 2020 👇

Second, timetable and ticketing data remains a mess (and the Rail Passenger Rights Regulation has not improved matters)

How do you solve this one? With some better open data standards

Right, it's taken a while longer to finish than I'd hoped, but my report about what's happening to the railways in Serbia 🇷🇸 is done 👇
jonworth.eu/how-to-repair-…

#BerlinBeogradBerlin

Summary in the 🧵
First, the eyewitness experience

The Subotica - Novi Sad train is probably the worst train I have ever taken, as the infrastructure is so bad. Closing the line to upgrade here makes sense... ImageImageImageImage
Second, Serbia's rail upgrade plans

Whether all of these plans will happen, and on time, is the big question, but the plans themselves make a lot of sense - there is a solid logic here ImageImage
