Constipation, oh constipation,
Why do you cause such frustration?

We try to drink water and eat our greens,
But nothing seems to break this routine.

So you sit and wait and hope and dream,
I now teach your bowels to flow like a stream.

1/ How to poo 💩! Was listening to the new @hubermanlab with @DrGottfried this AM (at 3:37) on hormones and #constipation & was inspired to do a little thread on my top #6 tips for dealing with constipation ... hopefully this thread helps at least 1 silent sufferer
2/ This is a topic I'm interested in is bc as someone with a hx of proctitis + cecal patch (form of ulcerative colitis strongly linked to constipation), it's something I've struggled w/ at times. It's not fun & a far more prevalent problem than people realize 4 obvious reasons
3/ Let's start the list.

#1 tip has nothing to do with diet, but technique!

In normal seated position with knees at 90o, your puborectalis muscle strangles your rectum. If you squat with the assistance of a squatty potty (or 'toilet yoga') you receive this strangle-hold

#Kiwifruit found effective in #constipation
1. Constipation is a common problem and drug treatments do not work in many.
In a recent trial, efficacy of kiwifruit was tested in patients with functional constipation (FC) & constipation-predominant irritable bowel syndrome (IBS-C)
2. Participants were randomly assigned to consume either two ripe green kiwifruit without the skins, or 7.5 g of #psyllium per day for 4 weeks.
Psyllium (OTC) is considered a first-line treatment for both the constipation conditions with which participants were diagnosed.
3. At the end of the 4-week treatment periods, the people with functional constipation who ate kiwifruit demonstrated an average increase of 1.53 bowel movements per week, a statistically significant increase.

Those with IBS-C demonstrated an increase of 1.73 bowel movements.

#Constipation is more about symptoms than frequency! 🚽

It’s also a *symptom* (like chest pain), so need to figure out what’s causing it and treat accordingly.

💨The gut microbiota generates ~0.2L–1.5L of gas per day
💨>99%: hydrogen (H2), carbon dioxide (CO2), & methane (CH4)– *odorless*
💨foul smell of gas from <1%: sulfur–containing gases hydrogen sulfide (H2S), methanethiol (CH3SH), dimethyl sulfide [(CH3)2S] + volatile compounds
🦠bacteria in the colon ferment substrates that are not digested or absorbed in the upper GI tract (e.g. carbohydrates, proteins, fats)
🦠produce short-chain fatty acids, branched-chain fatty acids, ammonia, N-nitro compounds, phenolic and indolic compounds, and various gases

To kick things off: how do you diagnose #SIBO?
#SIBO is a disorder characterized by excessive colonization of the small intestine by organisms usually found in the colon, especially Gram-negative bacteria.

(NB: the more we learn, it seems the *type* of bacteria is more important than the *number!*)

What is #PelvicFloor #dysfunction? When these muscles become too tight, then they may become a source of #pain 💢 Additionally #tight muscles are problematic because they may not be able to generate enough force to function properly, support the organs & act as part of our core🧵
As we age and in response to #surgery, #childbirth, or #constipation the muscles can also become over lengthened which also makes them weak & unable to function properly 😮🧵
In addition to the length & strength of the muscles being altered, our ability to control the #muscles💪can also become impaired, this is called a loss of motor control. There are many causes to #PFD, but the good news is that #pelvicfloor #physical #therapy can help🙏🏽
