This showcase bit is my favorite scam in the Trump #coronapocalypse repertoire. Image
This seems prima facie true, but it is actually a false cause fallacy.

Trump claims the test causes the "case," but it doesn't.

The test does not cause the case, the test _detects_ the case that pre-exists the test.

The virus causes the case.

In other words: this is nonsense.
When I say nonsense, I mean it is completely illogical, but it sounds good. So he says it over and over.

It must be so great to be untethered from logic and reality.

A history of the #coronapocalypse but told through ever more technologically advanced zoom selfies. Image
zoomies? self-zoomies? Idk
I just got done chatting about Demagogue for President with the very smart and funny @pescami for a @SlateGist episode for next week.

I'm not saying that you should listen to his podcast, but you should listen to his podcast. šŸ˜‰

MUST READ for those still wondering why Coronavirus is a bigger deal than Seasonal flu? Here it is in a nutshell. I hope this helps. Feel free to share this to others who donā€™t understand...
It has to do with RNA sequencing.... I.e. genetics. Seasonal flu is an ā€œall human virusā€.
The DNA/RNA chains that make up the virus are recognized by the human immune system. This means that your body has some immunity to it before it comes around each year... you get immunity two ways... through exposure to a virus, or by getting a flu shot.
Novel viruses, come from animals.... the WHO tracks novel viruses in animals, (sometimes for years watching for mutations). Usually these viruses only transfer from animal to animal (pigs in the case of H1N1) (birds in the case of the Spanish flu).

If I see one more post on how to be productive during the #coronapocalypse , I might scream.

If all you did today was survive, Iā€™m proud of you.
I got dressed for exactly one hour while I got groceries and then it was back to PJā€™s for the rest of the day. I scrolled through twitter for hours and then stared at my wall for an hour when I felt a panic attack coming on. And I cried. I canā€™t even watch TV or read right now.
Friends that are isolated from family, friends and loved ones right now, I feel you. I feel you so hard. Friends that have been battling depression and other mental health issues, Iā€™m with you.

And no, FaceTime doesnā€™t seem to cut it but it definitely offers moments of reprieve.

THREAD: This is what itā€™s like when a restaurant closes during #coronapocalypse:

Today we picked up our final checks. We are all laid off & are eligible for #Unemployment. Our GM & Chef/Owner set up the dining room like a grocery store so we could walk around & take food home /1
It was incredibly sad. We tried to maintain our social distance, but weā€™re a family so some people hugged. I tried to be logical with my food choices, but it felt so overwhelming because of feels, plus most was perishable food /2
I made sure to get things I knew Iā€™d eat: a lot of bread, some cheese, pasta, pickles, butter, eggs. I did take some smoked salmon, as well as some chicken & bacon to freeze, but left the Impossible patties, whole fishes, & duck for others /3

The idea that a public health crisis like #coronavirus would not result in a financial crisis in a country where personal consumption provides 70% of our GDP is the kind of brutal stupidity that typifies American economic policy <THREAD>
This segment begins, "What is going on, is the question, quite simply, that a lot of people who aren't sophisticated about the market are asking." Never mind that "sophistication" about the market, the commodity that experts are selling, is as worthless as Lehman Bros stock...
I'll tell you what's going on in a nutshell: when the long-term unsustainable rhythm of consumer spending is disrupted, the flow of money upon which debt-ridden capitalist enterprises depends causes a worrying interruption in the pyramidal flow of money from the bottom to the top

A friend just told me his boss (whoā€™s the CEO but in general runs the company in a very modernized/worker friendly way) is willing to allow work from home but refusing to take more safety precautions b/c ā€œthe whole #COVID19 thing is a hoax from the biased mediaā€. #MAGAMasochismšŸ˜·
The whole story really highlights the problem with the unholy alliance between business owners, supply side economics (that arenā€™t worker friendly) and the @GOP. In a public health crisis, the CEO mentality still attempts to maintain profits while skimping on worker well-being.
IOW, the CEO mentality is very much aligned with Trumpā€™s inclination to minimize the threat of Coronavirus/COVID19, not just b/c many of them voted for this disaster and still support it, but b/c acknowledging the scope of the problem then working to fix it requires less profit.

my favourite thing about #coronapocalypse is everyone (but especially the "cognitive neuroscientists") on twitter suddenly becoming experts in virology and epidemiology
if anyone from another expertise spewed onto twitter telling these people their business they would shout them down as outsiders who *obviously* know nothing because they come from a different discipline
at least #kingdomseason2 is on @NetflixUK. I'm not sure why but I found the first season overwhelmingly great. Apparently period Korean zombies is my thing

At the beginning of 2020, I went on sabbatical for 4 months. To celebrate my full recovery from cancer, I had planned a bucket-list trip: a round-the-world cruise on a small ship. Talk about bad timing!#coronavirus #cruiseship 1/
Back in January, no one expected a virus in China would explode into #coronapocalypse. My #travelinsurance company helpfully informed me that "fear" of a disease was not a covered reason for cancellation. The #cruiseship line wasn't offering refunds then either. 2/
We departed Los Angeles Jan 20, westbound on the Pacific Princess. There were the usual #cruiseship hiccups: harbor traffic in Rangiroa diverted us to Moorea, Cyclone Uesi kept us from reaching Stewart Island and Milford Sound so we went to Christchurch instead. 3/

1/ Buckle up, this is a #coronapocalypse threat and it might take a while.

My email inbox this morning is filled with hate mail from Trump supporters angry that I lampooned their hero's handling of the COVID-19 outbreak. Technically, that's not surprising. But...
2/ ...the brunt of the comments are a regurgitation of Trump-world talking points, roughly covering three areas:

1) China "sent us" the virus
2) The utterly false claim that the Obama administration similarly bungled the H1N1 outbreak
3) The media are overhyping/it's no biggie
3/ Here are some examples:
