As I think about this @Eurovision #Eurovision2023 , I wonder – are we truly united by music? I considered writing some scathing diatribe saying ‘no’. And then realised I was wrong.

Because this popped up on my @YouTube feed 👇
@ChoirOfTheEarth, directed by @mrbenengland, teach music line-by-line in full choir & sectional rehearsals via YouTube. You record your own voice @ home, on your📱! A team of elves / sound engineers play back YOUR performance in a live online concert.
So what? Well, I was at the Messiah in person get together in Belfast, hosted by @DownandConnor.

I thought
get a church + sing = go time 🎙️

But no. No no no no no.

The British RF brings in billions- yes BILLIONS, annually frm all their ‘investments’ over the decades!🤨
‼️ Considering that,
I think the RF should NO LONGER RECEIVE income frm UK TAX PAYERS bc:
1) they DONT NEED IT
2) the Brits are SUFFERING financially! theguardian.com/uk-news/ng-int…
@maddow @Lawrence @washingtonpost

‼️Jus like our GOV leaders
I think it’s well PAST time the Brits be allowed to access/AUDIT ALL the ACTUAL financial DETAILS (instead of generalizations) of their RF’s finances!
Especially while the Brits are SUFFERING financially! #coronation
Also, how is it even FAIR that the RF gets to KEEP ALL the MILLIONS they make monthly frm all their “private” income frm: investment portfolios, capital gains, inheritance.. but MOSTLY frm the 2 duchies [Cornwall & Lancaster] & NOT be required to pay ANY taxes on ANYTHING.?🤨

Son 4: Gray's Inn, Inner Temple, Lincoln's Inn and Middle Temple

I’ve been meditating on the st Augustine gospel book used in the #Coronation , the UKs oldest Humanmade object not found with archeology
It was carried by around 40 church planting monks from Rome. Space was limited but they brought it because it was the essential item for their work.
There were already Christians in Britain when then arrived (after trying to quit once). Most of these Christians weren’t interested in seeing the recently arrived Anglo Saxons follow Jesus.

In wake of #Coronation colonialism & empire are being grappled with new fervour. We’d never see a Robert Clive statue in modern India. His 🇫🇷counterpart (my recent photos) looms over Pondicherry. I’ve a connection w/ Joseph-François Dupleix ex-Governor General of French India 1/5 Image
Nemesis to #Clive & East India Company (discussed brilliantly @EmpirePodUK w/ @tweeter_anita @DalrympleWill + read his book The Anarchy), Dupleix harboured aspirations of establishing a French empire in India. Oddly, my metro station in #Paris was also named in his glory. 2/5 ImageImage
Spoiler: it all went downhill for Dupleix. He died back in Paris impecunious, despairing. He was no match for Clive’s military & strategic prowess . Yet it is his statue that stands on Indian soil: a jarring nostalgic nod, as if colonizers came in good & bad moral flavours. 3/5 Image

Yesterday I got arrested whilst filming a @JustStop_Oil supporter holding a banner on the pavement near the coronation route. I'm a filmmaker and had my @bectu press accreditation visible around my neck.

Police deemed this to be "conspiracy to commit a public nuisance".
After police stopped me filming, they ripped my press pass off and handcuffed me behind my back.
Even before this protester held this banner up, myself and 4 protesters were surrounded by police and stop and searched to look for "articles to commit criminal damage". They didn't find anything.

Some #medieval English kings' consecrations were multilingual, too. This 1000-year-old Old English oath claims it's "letter-for-letter what Archbishop Dunstan [d. 988] gave our lord at Kingston the day he was consecrated king." bl.uk/collection-ite… Image
The king promised:
1. The Church of God and all the people would have true peace.
2. He would forbid acts of robbery and other bad things.
3. He would uphold justice and mercy.
This has been translated and analyzed by Mary Clayton: jstor.org/stable/4451097… ImageImage
The following text (prob added by Wulfstan d. 1023), further specifies that the king should condemn no one; protect widows, orphans, foreigners; prevent theft, adultery, incest, witches (wiccan), etc; feed the needy; have old and wise counsellors.

Today I was arrested at the #Coronation on suspicion of carrying eggs. I was identified by facial recognition cameras, and snatched from the protest in handcuffs so tight they cut my skin. For the second time I was dragged through a crowd of monarchists baying for my blood....1
I was searched, and when they found nothing, was released after half an hour. The police had to escort me back through the monarchist crowds because so many people were assaulting me...2

A 🧵 of thoughts after watching the grand spectacle (or tamasha?) of the #Coronation. I can’t help but feel that Britain could really do with better education about how the monarchy works in school & via media reporting! 1/9
This Guardian piece encapsulates the need for greater public understanding/awareness of the workings of the modern monarchy. The focus on royal celebrity melodrama or spectacle blinds us to its practical political & economic impact. 2/9

theguardian.com/uk-news/2023/m…
Whether we choose to keep the monarchy as head of state in the UK or the Crown’s other ‘realms’, we all ought to be more informed & able to discuss the nature of its role & activities. Yet access to royal historical archives is tightly restricted 3/9

During the #Coronation of #KingCharles, he was anointed with fragrant chrism oil prepared by the Greek Orthodox Patriarch of Jerusalem Theophillos III, Byzantine hymns were given and Charles III was dressed as a Byzantine Emperor before receiving the Imperial Signs. Image
All these underline once again the primacy of the Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople @EcuPatriarch within the framework of Orthodox Christianity and its Byzantine legacy that is kept alive by the Orthodox Greeks worldwide.
Plus the two Holy Byzantine Icons of Jesus Christs and Virgin Mary inside #WestministerAbbey underline all the above

1/18 THOUGHT for the #Coronation W/E:

Our NHS is a "jewel in the crown" of UK. But pay in the NHS has been #RoyallyScrewed 👇

If you want to understand why nurses, junior doctors (& potentially consultants) are striking, start with this graph
Short🧵 pls read to end & share/RT Image
2/18 Firstly H/T @jburnmurdoch - the graph above was very much inspired by his excellent analysis & charts on NHS pay. This thread of his (which excluded consultants pay) is very much worth a read

@jburnmurdoch 3/18 But coming back to my chart you will see that measured against "consumer price index", pay versus that measure has completely failed to keep up inflation - with

Consultants ⬇️⬇️DOWN £38,764/yr
"Junior" docs (all gds) ⬇️⬇️DOWN £17,394/yr
Nurses DOWN ⬇️£5,146/yr Image

Qué jodido entender estas cosas desde una república (más o menos) democrática.

Por cierto, ¿qué opinan de la monarquía los adalides argentos de la meritocracia? Imagino que Londres debe ser el mayor de los enemigos para ellos, ¿no? Image

As the 🇬🇧#Coronation takes place in London, here's some fun facts about monarchies around the world.

I find Americans have the mistaken impression that Europe has many monarchies. In fact, excluding microstates, there are just 8 - and only 3 have been there more than 200 years. Image
There are actually more monarchies in Asia than in Europe.

The world has 16 kings, and only one queen (🇩🇰). Then there are 4 princes, 3 sultans, 2 emirs, 1 pope and 1 emperor (🇯🇵). Image
There are 4 types of monarchies remaining in Europe:

🇬🇧British
🇸🇪🇩🇰🇳🇴Scandinavian
🇳🇱🇧🇪🇱🇺Low Countries
🇪🇸Iberian
🇻🇦🇱🇮🇦🇩🇲🇨Microstates

This map shows when other European monarchies ended (most give the year of national independence from a imperial monarchy) Image

Next, the procession into the Abbey with The Coronation Cross – a hand-crafted item made up of relics, including a shard of wood from the cross on which Jesus Christ was crucified. It also contains fragments of wicker from Easter Bunny’s original egg basket
