A brief A Brief Response by Dr. Chad Hanson to Baseless Attacks by Crystal Kolden, who has unfortunately blocked our account on social medias and refuses to engage in a scientific or friendly discussion to find common ground or a resolution to our differences.
A thread. (1/22)
Crystal Kolden is a scientist who is heavily funded by the U.S. @forestservice, according to her own CV. The U.S. Forest Service’s primary land management activity is selling trees from U.S. public forests to logging companies and keeping the revenue for its budget. (2/22)
The USFS is,in this sense, part of the logging industry. In a recent paper in @MDPIOpenAccess peer-reviewed scientific journal,Birds,I found that logging conducted by the USFS was associated with higher, not lower,🔥severity w/in CA Spotted Owl habitat in the 2020 #CreekFire (3/22)

To anyone who's near ANY fire
⤵️
Clear defensible space around property.

Prep to leave even if the orders aren't by you yet. You may have very little time to evac so do it now.

Make a 'to go' bag.

If you have horses, llamas, farm animals get them ready to move. Put trailers nearby. Keep treats handy. Sugar cubes, apples, carrots. Something they like you can use to entice them into the trailers.

To evac sheep/goats/pigs etc? You can fit 4 to 8 in a med sized pickup bed, depending on their size. A mini pony/burro fits in the backseat of a med sized car. Vans work well to evac animals just lay seats down.

Hello to everyone suddenly paying attention to the orange skies of the west coast!
Local journalist here, fresh off weeks of interviewing weather, climate, forest, and fire experts to give you . . . a #CaliforniaFires explainer thread:
1. Our sky looks crazy because the sunlight is filtering through up to 50,000 feet of smoke and ash to reach the ground.
2. This happens when fires are so
a) big, and
b) intense
that they make their own weather: a column of super-heated air that launches smoke and ash miles up into the atmosphere.

RIP Cressman’s
1904-2020
A couple miles down the 4-lane from Cressman’s, the destruction crosses the road and we can hear firefighters at work, but can’t see them through the smoke.

37665 Tollhouse Road was built in 1968.
It was made of wood, but there’s not much of it left behind.

Auberry Road approaching Meadow Lakes is nowhere near as smoky as the 4-lane.
#CreekFire
This is as far as we got going up Auberry Road, about 3 miles shy of getting to the upper intersection with Highway 168.
Conditions from here were too smoky and I was warned about downed power lines.
#CreekFire
Dozer crews with @CAL_FIRE did some work up to protect homes in Meadow Lakes, but they were on the move when we got there.

The #CreekFire jumped CA-168 just south of Shaver Lake. People still in the area are unable to leave Shaver Lake due to the road conditions. @latimes @latimesphotos
Update: People are about to be escorted out of Shaver Lake, as as road conditions have reportedly become less hostile. #CreekFire
Some people waited at the Sierra Marina parking lot for much longer than I had to, and I waited for 3 hours! #CreekFire ImageImageImage

There is a lot of fear and fatalism around #ClimateChange and #wildfire. The combination of these two will cause significant ecosystem change, think forest to grassland. Large, hot wildfires are the catalyst for change. We can reduce the amount of change that occurs... 1/n

that has built up because we have put out fires for over 100 years. Coincidentally, even if this surplus vegetation doesn't burn in a wildfire, hotter droughts will cause more of it to die anyhow. Fast moving fires like the #CreekFire are supported by large amounts of... 3/n
