Unpacking a whole lot of data around #dungeonsanddragons

Last week I wasn't expecting to study the implosion of the Dungeons & Dragons brand owned by Wizards of the Coast and Hasbro Gaming.

#Hasbro #wotc #criticalrole #wizardsofthecoast #dnd5e #dnd #ttrpg #pathfinder Image
As a company Wizards of the Coast did over a billion dollars in revenue last year.

After one week of brand damage millions of dollars have been shaved off this revenue and it appears to be getting worse day by day. It will likely evolve into double-digit percentages.
Just on Youtube there were 500+ videos covering the topic this week. Fan creators and influencers generated over 10M views across hundreds of videos that generated millions of hours of view time and 110K+ comments spreading to every other platform.

It was never my intention to release this experience because I did not want to make my footprint in this industry this way. But in light of two dangerous people threatening and slandering some of my closest friends . It’s time I share my experience… a thread … ImageImageImageImage
… For context; I tattooed @satinephoenix and @StoneJamison years ago. They flew me and my partner to their home where we also stayed. There was zero conversation of contracts - just the understanding that Jamison wanted 3 days worth of tattoos…. ImageImageImageImage
@satinephoenix @StoneJamison …During my time there i witnessed the contrast of shared laughs and demonstrable domestic gaslighting from @StoneJamison towards @satinephoenix . At this point, Satine and I had a very distant but kind friendship… ImageImageImageImage

For @carolinethegeek & #CR7Years I *think* my first CR tweet is here. I’d gotten tenure the year CR started, my 1st book was out, & I was a lurker for a long time. But I’d respond to that call & write my 1st piece on #CriticalRole.

Now? I joke I’m the senior prof of CR studies. Image
I’d loved actual plays for a long time, but that chapter gave me “permission” to pitch a course on #TTRPG narrative, which plunged me into the community of nerdy-ass designers, players, fans, & academics.

That course will be followed by two more this fall.
Now I’m finishing up my 2nd academic piece on CR & narrative, & used CR as a “way in” to talking about actual play more broadly for broader audiences. My career spent telling the stories of emerging genres & hidden creative histories is now focused on the spaces CR has opened up.

Good morning! Between meetings it’s time to read the first #CriticalRole *adventure* (rather than setting) book, CALL OF THE NETHERDEEP. I’m finishing a chapter about CR’s narrative structures, & Netherdeep is the final case study. Throughout the day I’ll post some notes here. 🧵
A note: I’m going to try to avoid specific *spoilers* here (no promises about the chapter). My interest is in thinking about how the book is set up for different audiences.
The prior CR supplement books (Tal’Dorei Guide/Tal’Dorei Reborn, & Explorer’s Guide to Wildemount) were settings, not adventures. So while they were neck-deep in worldbuilding, they were sparing of full-on narrative (until the end of Reborn, which recaps Vox Machina 20 years on)

Percy de Rolo’s honest and vulnerable depiction of PTSD: a thread 🧵 (aka essay. I mean it, this is long)

In Taliesin’s creation of Percival Fredrickstein von Musel Klossowski de Rolo III… aka Percy, he brought forth a part of PTSD that is not presented often in media. It’s an understatement to say Percy has experience multitudes of traumatic things in his life time; his hair (1)

Reading through Tal'dorei Reborn and revisiting the Explorer's Guide to Wildemount, I'm struck by a peculiar question: What the fuck is up with Exandria's second moon, Ruidus? Allow me to explain... #CriticalRole #TalDoreiReborn 1/17 Exandria moon Ruidus. Art b...
Despite being, you know, A MOON, there's a lot of mystery surrounding this celestial body. Where Catha (the larger moon) is closely tied to the chaotic good god Sehanine and has a predictable moon cycle, Ruidus kind of does its own thing. 2/17
Tal'dorei Reborn says Ruidus has an "unexplainable tendency to simply not appear in the sky... or glow with unknown light, creating an unexpected full moon." The latter is important because—among other things—some believe making deals or plans under a full Ruidus are doomed. 3/17

Hi... Friendly Neighborhood TTRPG Designer here....

Can we please get away from the "tragic backstory" TM for not only PC characters but also NPCs. Specifically those "monstrous race" NPCs. Why can't the bugbear baker have loving parents and stable home life? #dnd #ttrpgs
Well this kinda took off for me...

If something like this intrigues you, then you should pick up the first Volume of #NotAnotherMonsterQuest because friend shaped monsters should be more common.

dmsguild.com/m/product/3639…
So there has been some discussion about "people wouldn't do high risk adventures if they have a stable home life" but I disagree. I think it's a lot easier to go off adventuring if you have people who support you, rather than doing it alone. Just one creators thoughts...

Professor Voice: as anticipated, a summer mini series, though unusually for CR miniseries/one-shots, staying in Exandria/canon. As hoped for by many, blend of OG & new cast. It's going to be super interesting to see how this plays out (so to speak).

Em Voice: WOOHOO @quiddie!
The other thing I'm thrilled about is that as many folks know, I study #CriticalRole, publish about it, & am teaching a game storytelling course this fall. #ExandriaUnlimited is scaled so that (hopefully) I'll bring it into the classroom. @marisharay this is a brilliant idea.
As I've written about, the length of CR is, paradoxically, part of its deep appeal for its core audience. Many of the existing transformations (comics, novel) *extend* the canon. But the limited series & the animated series are designed to lower barriers to entry. Super smart.

A story about my character from the @CriticalRole #ESO rpg! Hoa Sen means "lotus flower" in Vietnamese. My mother's name is Hoa, and in my younger years I remember her telling neighbors her name was "Lily" because she felt bad they couldn't pronounce her name.1/4 ImageImage
My mom & I butt heads a lot, and there's also a 99.9% chance she still doesn't understand what I do for a living, but probably when she was a refugee coming to the US during the war she didn't imagine her kid becoming a professional RPG player & wearing elf ears on camera 😅 2/4 ImageImage
It's a little selfish, but I wanted to name my character after my mom so more people would know how to say her name & she wouldn't have to be embarrassed anymore. It's pronounced HWAA, once syllable, breathy at the front. Thanks to the cast & crew at CR for taking 3/4

My Facebook memories reminded me of this, three years ago. (Is that all?)
@c2e2 @matthewmercer #CriticalRole #Critters Image
This is one of those memories that will live forever in my mind as I met one of the kindest people I have ever known and the DM of the web series that changed my life in so many ways by not only literally saving it (severe suicidal ideations at the time)
but also giving me the inspiration to try things I thought were only to be dreams and the courage to achieve those dreams in ways I never thought possible.
In those three years I have gone from working at a job I absolutely hated (Amazon) to obtaining my MLIS degree,

Fascinating @guardian interview with Stanley Johnson from 2012.

Could provide some answers to the utter disregard of economic prosperity with #Brexit and #COVID19 if Stanley has played #CriticalRole in his son’s ideology.
There was this strange event too

Seeing some VERY weird conversation about planned “aging” of characters and the like... which is very much not the case? A randomly rolled encounter combined with unexpected player choices makes for unexpected outcomes.
I’m seeing some really toxic discussions, based in (surprise) shipping spaces. Don’t get me wrong. I’m all for shipping. I think, when engaged with in a HEALTHY way, can be a great way to enjoy media and engage with it.
However, the misinterpretation of a story (especially improvised) wielded as a weapon against others who disagree with your ship, or anger against not seeing YOUR ship realized and turning it into hate for a fandom and/or it’s creators is toxic beyond belief.

So I’m watching the Essek Supercut by thelittlestgoblin on YouTube: . First up this vid is a blessing and the creator must have had prophecy whispered in their ear by a god. Many thanks. #criticalrolespoilers

The new book being announced today is apparently a supplement for Wildemount.
Congratulations to Matthew Mercer and the entire team that worked on the book.

I could not imagine the amount of work, nor the validation, in seeing something you've worked on for so long
get published by the company that also publishes the game that started it all. (Yes, I'm aware that they didn't publish the original D&D). I am beyond happy for you all.

Secondly, let's talk about all the folks bashing this book before seeing it. How do you "know it will suck?"
If you're not a fan of #criticalrole, and just feel that you won't be inherently interested in the material - that's fine. I was the same way with Ravnica. You know what I didn't do? Shit all over the work the team that made it did. Why? Because I have no justification in

For many who won’t know what I’m talking about, this is a deep cut into my EXTREME nerdy side—including my love of Jon Heder, also commonly known as the star of #NapoleonDynamite.

For those who want the short version...

Think Napoleon Dynamite plays #DnD as a musically gifted, half-orc barbarian—that’s right, a "bardbarian"—whose totem animal from which he draws his strength is the duck. Image

So I found out a friend of mine was using some pirated pdf @Wizards_DnD products to plan his next campaign. Found out he had no intention of purchasing, nor did he feel bad because they were a "big company." Here is why that pisses me off:

#dungeonsanddragons #CriticalRole
I am CEO of a really tiny RPG company that is desperately trying to break even on our products. We do this for love, for sure, but things cost money. Not only that, as much as I thought I did, the main thing that I have learned is how much work it takes to make even small things.
Right now we are working on a #savage worlds setting called #ArchonsofNikud and it is going to cost us thousands of dollars and untold thousands of person hours to make. It is hard to describe the blood, sweat, and tears that will go into this project.
