@verodigiorgio at #CodemotionMilan22 answering the question on how to grow professionally (as software architect for her, but it’s the same for all paths in #softaredevelopment). Let’s discuss about it in this thread 🧵 👇🏻
Let me introduce the thread saying that the talk by @verodigiorgio at #CodemotionMilan22 about #gitops was very helpful and rich of content and points of inspiration. Surely something to try in every day company business to improve our products, developer and customer experience.
Next, going straight to the point what @verodigiorgio says here is that #curiosity and the ability to face our ideas with other #developers (or more generally other colleagues in the business having another point of view) are fundamentals point for growth and success.

This morn's news carries lots of coverage of @Ofstednews new Briefing Report on t impact of t pandemic on children in t Early Years. I thought I wd bring some context & critique to it, starting with this poorly chosen photo frm @EveningStandard. A THREAD standard.co.uk/news/uk/ofsted…
2. See that photo of a letter board used in the @EveningStandard? Its NOTHING to do w/ early years. STOP winding parents up & making them anxious about their young children's ability to write letters & numbers. That capacity is NOT important in the Early Years.
3. The @thetimes is worse. "Childrn struggling to write &communicate". What?? For yng childrn, these are totally separate things. STOP winding parents up w/ fear. I'm not saying we don't hv lots to worry abt. I'm saying: Let's worry abt t right things.

Its been a rough weekend for t news. How abt we hv a THREAD OF JOY?
This week @realdcameron & I intervwd @czzpr on children's LAUGHTER. @eliistender10 has just offerd a brilliant illustratn! So when we look closer, what details do we find in 60 secs of a @sesamestreet exchange?
2. From t start (.02), we know this is a deep conversatn because they are lookng right into one another's eyes. Think abt how good Jim Henson was as a puppeteer, to get that angle workng, both for us & the child. That's part of what makes Kermit 'real': his eye gaze, his timing.
3. Oooh! By .03, a self-esteem challnge has been posed! "Can you sing the alphabet?" Kermit waits VERY attentively, his intense eye gaze *containing* t big feelngs that come up for her. See? She looks away. Calming self-regulation. "Am I up to this? Can I? Um...Yes! Yes I could."

In today’s @ObserverUK :
“Professionals can sometimes underestimate children’s suppressed feelings. From ages 4-11, Ella’s behavioural problems had been interpreted as a conduct issue, not a sign that at home she & her mother were under duress.” #ACES
2. “The recommendatns address how patchy many professionals’ understanding of coercive control is.” #FierceCuriosity is needed to help our children, not defensive egos. This is why I proudly tell stories of professional journeys of insight, like @bainsfordht & @KeeganSmith_Law .
3. “Why didn’t the school, social workers & police join up the dots?” Well, one reason is that we often aren’t curious enough, or we don’t pay attention to children’s FEELINGS. We’re often too tired & overwhelmed ourselves to manage that. So - that’s a place to start. #Curiosity

Building Expertise

Even if you are someone who dabbles in multiple topics, you can still build expertise.

Find HOW from the following threads🧵
1/ If you have multiple interests, it means you are more curious than others.

In fact, I had to go past 200 books to understand my keen interest in (cognitive + behavioral) psychology, neuroscience, and philosophy.

And mind you, I’m an economist by training.

So Have Patience!
2/ If you are still struggling to pick a topic, then choose a topic based on something you already find fascinating and love to learn.

For instance, if your bookshelf is filled with leadership & Development books, then there lies the hint.

LOVE being faculty at @MIT this semester for a class on #dataanalytics & #datascience. I tend to PM my mentees, especially women and #blackexcellence to start to prepare questions to ask. Too often people stay silent. Speak up. Never be embarrassed to show #curiosity.
Listening right now to mid-semester progress reports from teams and am feeling like such a proud #datascience #BigData #bigdataanalytics momma. Bear cubs doing good (well AND good in world)

LOVE that this is a space within @MIT that focuses on #SDoH and #equity.
Literally right now, hearing about a study on #socialmedia chatter as a driver of vaccines hesitancy driven by #Twitter - start postulate "cause/effect" by an incident that happens within days after a vaccine - like ppl automatically assume a death is "caused" by vaccine

I think I can design a game.

A game that can teach the children how to learn.

I am not saying I have done PHD in game design or learning or child psychology.

What I understand is that learning needs to be e fun personal and exciting.

Assumption: kids love to play.
For example..

How would you teach children to speak?

Of course speaking properly need to be taught.

We do that all the time with the kids around us or we were taught by our parents.

Doing it online i.e. at scale is the challenge.
How do we do it?

-He is your dada ji
-Did you say namaste to your visitors.
-Do you recognise our visitors-
-Dont speak foul language
-Remind the correct pronunciation of something
-Ask same thing a few hundred times untill kids respond correctly.
Etc etc etc.

A THREAD on 'masks', & the growing polarization that is harming all of us.

We urgently need to develop effective ways to reduce divisions, & claw back common courtesy & decency.

There's no quick fix.

It requires all of us to take responsibility for what we say & write.
MASKS have been used throughout human history, on all sorts of occasions — religious, celebratory, punitive, therapeutic and playful.

They are used to entertain, frighten, disguise and protect.

Masks can also be used to foster the emergence of new identities. Image
We sometimes wear metaphorical masks. We may feel the need to mask our true feelings in order to protect ourselves or others, or to conceal selfish, ulterior motives. We are said to ‘drop the mask’ in those rare, intimate moments in which we reveal our ‘inner, authentic’ selves. Image

Jack of all trades, master of one.

- a THREAD!
Basically translating to knowing something about everything and knowing everything about 1-2 subjects.

We all are pretty much aware of how important skills have become in this time of the pandemic. We're moving towards a gig economy where freelance work and contractual-based...
...work will slowly become the norm.

Amidst all of this, what's imperative is to hone our crafts and learn as many skills as possible but master one skill to top it all.

How do we do that?

I love me some Walt Whitman, @MassGovernor. Here are things I’m curious about:
1) Are there any other big aspirations you have for MA’s future aside from figuring out what work will look like in the yrs ahead & “getting there 1st”? Like ending childhood hunger, or
#mapoli #MASOTC
...closing opportunity & achievement gaps in education, or building the greenest economy in the nation, or halving the racial wealth divide in 10 yrs? How do you square being the most popular Gov in America with not using that capital to do something more ambitious for humanity?
2) At 305K vaccine doses deployed a week, how long will it take us to get MA to herd immunity?

#Covid lockdowns were an unusual gift. Watching my roses wilt, leathers crack, convictions shake, relationships dull and few loved ones taken away, I came to appreciate the essence of #chaos in a non-mathematical way. Art by Cindy Derby, from 'A Velocity of Being'
Riding the upstoppable arrow of #time, chaos can, and will take over everything – it's a question of when, not if. Spending 20+ hours for a whole year at home, I personally witnessed new order derive from, and decay back into chaos – yes, #entropy grows.
The silent master of #change, it lurks at the edge of all organisation, constantly tugging at equilibrium, ever ready to topple it into countless permutations of form, flavor and function. And through these, it shapes our shared, mortal destinies, at all #resolutions.
