Aaaand there we have it...

@RoryStewartUK believes the #SingleMarket would be a "big mistake", b/c...

...immigration.

He'd be happy with a #CustomsUnion, as long as it didn't involve...

immigration.

He's as much an anti-immigration Tory as the rest of them.

@RoryStewartUK As if to underline his non-#SingleMarket, Leaver credentials, @RoryStewartUK says:-

"I want to leave all the institutions of the #EU".

I'll repeat the reason he gave in my previous clip:-

@RoryStewartUK A few clips from @RoryStewartUK on @LBC, where he chose to display his true colours.

1) Under that urbane exterior, he just wants to "get [#Brexit] done".

To "get back our sovereignty" and "get back control of our borders".

I thought the govt WP said UK was always sovereign?

1/ It's all scaremongering isn't it about #brexit and #drugs? Stockpiling, price hikes, and, as @MattHancock warns, dead patients. Well, here's the lowdown and it's not pretty. With or without #softbrexit.
A thread
2/ Patients with long-term conditions such as #diabetes, #asthma or #schizophrenia, #blood pressure, #heart problems or #cancer down to daily medicines for #rashes and skin problems, take for granted that they will be able to get their medicines when they need them.
3/ According the UK's Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy
Committee publications.parliament.uk/pa/cm201719/cm…
73 per cent of pharmaceutical imports in the UK come from the EU. This equates to around 37 million packets of medicines every month from the EU worth £18.3 billion.

If the UK ends up in a #CustomsUnion with the EU then it will a) do nothing for the UK's service sector (the backbone of the UK economy and where the UK's largest service trading partner is the EU27), b) tie the UK's hands on any of its own future trade agreements
c) The UK will have to apply the EU's external tariff, whilst having no say over it d) will have to offer all countries in the world with whom the EU has an FTA the same market access without reciprocal access for UK firms
e) A Customs Union will not solve the Northern Irish border issue as the UK will not be in regulatory alignment with the EU (including Ireland) and in line with c) will f) turn the UK from a rule maker into a rule taker

1. Am I the only one infuriated with the view that if @theresa_may and @jeremycorbyn agree a #brexit #customsunion then all is fine. This ignores the fact that it is leaving the #singlemarket that is the killer for business making, importing or exporting products. Why? A thread..
2/ Much of the commercial debate around #Brexit has focused on whether we stay in the #CustomsUnion or not. That is because this is the current battle between #Conservatives and #Labour. If Labour prevailed, and the UK remains in a Customs Union, then the tariff issue dies
3/ However, the much bigger problem relates to the #SingleMarket. Neither main party wants to stay in the Single Market because you can’t have free movement of goods, services and capital without accepting the same for people. But abandoning the single market means...

(1/4) Last year, I set out my view on staying in the #CustomsUnion with the EU. It would put us in a worse position than we are in today – a complete sell-out of Britain’s national interest and a betrayal of the voters in the referendum. My view hasn’t changed. #Brexit #FreeTrade
(2/4) The UK cannot have an independent trade policy if we stay in the Customs Union. In the #CustomsUnion we would have to apply European trade law without having a say in how it is made. #Brexit #FreeTrade #FreeTradeUK
(3/4)To join a #CustomsUnion with the EU, like Turkey has done, would leave us trapped – unable to conclude proper trade agreements with countries around the world. #Brexit #FreeTrade #FreeTradeUK

THREAD 🧵🤓

We’re on to Round 2 of #IndicativeVotes today so I’ve updated my explainer #IV2

🗳 What are #Brexit Indicative Votes?

🤔 How will the process work?

💡What ideas have been tabled?

⏳ What might happen next?

🚨 Hopefully it’s worth a couple of minutes ☕️ 🚆 🚌
Last week MPs debated alternatives to the Prime Minister’s #Brexit plan.

This happened because MPs backed an idea by Conservative MP & former Minister, Sir Oliver Letwin, to give control of Commons business to backbench MPs so they could put forward their visions for #Brexit
Parliamentary procedure is full of quirks, but giving backbench MPs control of the Commons in this way isn’t the norm.

MPs chose to disapply a Commons rule - Standing Order 14(1) - which says that the Government usually (largely) controls what business is debated in the House.

There seems to be some confusion about why @theSNP MPs abstained on #Boles & #Clarke amendments last night but it’s really very straightforward so here’s a thread explaining why #Brexit #IndicativeVotes
So @theSNP preference in line with the majority of #Scottish voters is to #Remain in the EU but v early on @scotgov put forward a compromise position in #ScotlandsPlaceInEurope to stay in the #SingleMarket & a #CustomsUnion & it was endorsed by @theSNP conf
It’s important to appreciate that to benefit from freedom of movement is vital for Scotland’s economic & demographic needs & to benefit from it you have to be a member of the single market.

So the next (and still not final?!) set of #nodeal notices is out. @instituteforgov will of course be diving into the detail so you don't have to - but that's a job for next week

First, here's a thread of some interesting things we've spotted from a quick scan of today's papers:
1 - first up, a line on the #CustomsUnion in the note on exporting mercury - clarification for worried backbenchers?
2 - no deal means no preferential access to the EU market, or to other markets where we currently have access via an EU free trade deal - unless the Govt can roll over those deals before next March. AFAIK, no confirmation that any have been rolled over yet

Don’t know which Europeans Mr. Hannan is speaking to but I haven’t met anyone in Brussels or in EU capitals who is unhappy with the Commission approach & I’ve spoken to a lot of them. #Brexit
In addition, no-one in the #EU is threatening the UK (I wld challenge Hannan to point to one threat that has come from a leading EU politician or negotiator), nor are they stopping the UK from leaving. #Brexit
The EU have been clear from the start that there are many trade models available to the UK & the UK have ruled most of them out. If it feels like the UK has little room for manoeuvre it is because the government painted itself into a corner. #Brexit

Who would have thunk!
British hauliers will need licenses and permits to be able to drive on European roads. In a no deal scenario there will be no way of getting UK goods into Europe!
Yup! This is not #Scaremongering but #facts
#BrexitMadness
The market access for British hauliers under a No deal scenario will only cover 3% of the needs.
#BrexitMadness #Transport
Check this thread where two experts on trade discuss the problem:
Take a look again at the situation on the Border with Turkey: Trucks driving into EU will need permit from every country they need to pass!
#CustomsUnion means free movement of goods but not trucks.

Theresa May must tell UK customs union costs

Being inside the customs union costs Britain billions of pounds each year

UK shoppers overpay for non-European imports due to common external tariffs protecting inefficient producers elsewhere in the EU👇

telegraph.co.uk/business/2018/…
Four fifths of these revenues go to Brussels

They’re particularly steep on clothing, food and footwear, hitting poorer UK shoppers hardest – which is unfair

To divert money we send the EU to the NHS instead we must be outside the customs union

Stick that on the side of a bus👇
Staying in the customs union means charging EU tariffs with no say in setting them – the “vassal state” argument

This is the ghastly deal foisted on Turkey – an unproven partner state trying to join the EU

Britain is not Turkey – Brussels is trying to keep us and our money in👇

Today is #EuropeDay!
It marks the anniversary of the 1950 Schuman Declaration, paving the way for even greater achievements in the decades that followed. Check out how we communicated about EU milestones through the years…
50 years ago, in 1968, we announced the creation of the #CustomsUnion with the aid of a well sharpened pencil and state-of-the-art technology. #EuropeDay
31 years ago, in 1987, we launched a student exchange programme: #Erasmus
All those years of mobility and cooperation have given Europe an open-minded and entrepreneurial generation of 9 million people. #EuropeDay

Here’s Daniel Hannan. He doesn’t understand the #CustomsUnion, the #SingleMarket or the #Schengen area.
I think we need to help Dan. Norway and Switzerland are in the #SchengenArea. Within the Schengen Area people can cross the borders without passport control. Try driving a lorry full of goods into Norway nd Switzerland and you go through customs checks.
This is Svinesund Customs Station at the main border crossing between Norway and Sweden. It can handle up to 2500 lorries a day. Clearing customs usually takes less than ten minutes, but may tale a couple of hours.

This is the Customs station at Svinesund, the main border crossing between 🇳🇴 and 🇸🇪 . It can handle up to 2,500 trucks/day - one truck every 4 min. 10,000 trucks go through Dover every day. Do the maths. It’s not possible. 🇳🇴 is in #SingleMarket but not in #CustomsUnion
But this should also give remainers some hope. I don’t think it will be possible for UK to leave both #CustomsUnion union and #SingleMarket - UK is not in #Schengen - Norway is in both Schengen and SM which makes trade easier, even if there’s a hard border between 🇸🇪and 🇳🇴
Then there’s the Irish Border of course. Again not possible to have a soft border between NI and ROI if UK leaves Single market and Customs Union. Even an EEA, Norway, solution would require a hard border here. Brexit is stupid!

Preventing a Brexit disaster - and the austerity this entails - requires more than the #CustomsUnion alone. So here’s a few reasons why Labour’s frontbench must, as a minimum, now also back the #SingleMarket (other than for the famous ‘four freedoms’):
Yes a Customs Union is needed. It helps 20% of our economy. For the other 80% (and growing!) of our economy, which is in ‘services’, we need the Single Market. The right to export UK service expertise is vital.
With 11% of our tax revenues coming from the UK financial services sector (£66bn), we need the Single Market so it can trade on the same basis as financial firms from the other 27 countries. We can’t pay for our NHS, schools, welfare support without this revenue.
