I’m in downtown #DC. The streets around the White House are full of people w/ Trump flags, Texas flags, “come and take” my guns flags, thin blue line flags & more. Chants of “four more years” echo from Freedom Plaza. A man on a bike rode past shouting, “No more Nazis!” #dcprotest
Outside SCOTUS, a large crowd of Trump supporters have arrived, surrounding local antifascist protesters on three sides with flags. The police are standing in between as Trump supporters chant “fuck Antifa” and the black-clad counterprotesters shout: “You lost!” #dcprotests
Frendship Heights resident & #DC protester Justin, 37, in the “Officer Pudge” outfit, says he was marching with the MAGA crowd to mock them — but no one really got it. He started a chant: “Only count Trump votes” and waved his sign to cheers. “It’s crazy,” he told me. #dcprotests

Out in front of the Supreme Court, where protesters are gathering to oppose the nomination of Judge Amy Coney Barrett, who will face the first day of confirmation hearings today in the Senate. Many are in plastic coveralls, masks and gloves — a nod to the still-raging pandemic.
It’s a small crowd, about 50 people now, as they begin to chant: “No covid test, no hearing!” #DCProtests #SCOTUS
As the group heads toward the Hart Senate Office Building, they pressed through a crowd of anti-abortion demonstrators out here to support Barrett. Chants of “no confirmation until inauguration” mingled with chants of “hey hey, ho ho, Roe v. Wade has got to go!” #SCOTUS

“We have our press we know and trust,” this young woman says
After stepping away from the BLM march and being followed to a bus stop — which temporarily caused the entire demo to pause on Connecticut Ave — I’m sitting here with five young protesters performing their duty as media minders. #marypoppins #sitzkrieg #Dcprotests

On the other side near Black Lives Matter Plaza. Doesn’t seem to be a kettling situation. Unclear why police are blocking protesters from accessing an open street

Let me speak on what happened in Georgetown tonight. #DCprotest #georgetownkaren
Tonight @concernedofdc led a siren/noise pollution protest where we blocked off streets in Georgetown. The police presence was heavy. As we blocked off streets we demanded that people turn around. This was a minor inconvenience for this affluent white neighborhood.
As we blocked streets, certain drivers got annoyed and attempted to maneuver their way around us. This particular white woman tried to cut through a gas station. Me and a couple other protestors stood in front of her car and demanded she turn around. Instead she steps on the gas.

As protesters made their way into Chinatown, military helicopters were positioned just above rooftops, sending gusts of dust into the air. A part of a tree fell, nearly hitting passerbys. The crowds dispersed down side streets. Some storefronts were shattered. #DCProtest.
About 10 minutes later, here it goes again.

Tonight, it was extremely disheartening to watch with my own eyes as Black activist leaders and other leaders of color repeatedly urged calm and respect on the frontlines while some white protestors entirely disregarded them and instigated unnecessary confrontations.

#DCprotest
It was truly absurd. Black leaders worked hard to keep everyone engaging respectfully, and some white people would throw objects and put everyone at risk by ignoring the pleas of Black activists and getting confrontational with cops. Clownish behavior.
Oh, this is absolutely true. Not only did they instigate confrontations, but they didn't even stay there as a buffer between law enforcement and Black protestors. They would run off. Their behavior was self-serving.

Window broken at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Foundation and Institute building. Protesters wrote “fuck Reagan” and “black lives matter” on the building. Thick black smoke rising nearby.
Found the fire: Vehicle on fire at the corner of 16th and I St. Police have blocked off the street. Protesters are running back toward the park, saying “they’re boxing us in!” Firefighters just arrived.
Getting more violent over here. Protesters are stealing dumpsters to set on fire and slinging bricks at the cops. Police used tear gas to clear protesters from the Reagan bldg. All of the I & 16th St intersection is blocked by police w/ riot shields, and they’re pushing forward.

A few minutes ago, protesters tore down one of the fences around Lafayette Square Park and tear gas was deployed.
