After the outstanding performance of the US Marines during WWI, Army leadership did not want a repeat performance of Marines upstaging the Army again at Normandy. Marines were held back from participating directly in the landings on June 6, 1944. However... 2/3
Marines were assigned to the Office of Strategic Services (OSS) and conducted clandestine combat operations against the German forces in France. On D-Day a few Good Marine observers were also attached to Army landing forces. #DDay2020 #DDay76

If you were on one of the Amphib Landing Ships the morning of the D-Day invasion, this is what you would have been staring down. Many troops were killed by machine gun fire before they hit the beach. 4400+ Allied Troops were killed on this day alone defending against evil.

Today is of course the 76th anniversary of D-Day. War artist (and mater children's boom illustrator) Edward Ardizzone travelled with British troops as the D-Day invasion took place, sketching on the landing craft as the men prepared to hit the beach.

Before the war Ardizzone wrote and illustrated the first book that would bring him to fame: Little Tim and the Brave Sea Captain, published by Oxford University Press. Post-war he did many Penguin covers for children's books. ImageImage
But in 1940 Edward Ardizzone began to work full-time for the War Office as an official war artist. He followed the British Expeditionary Force to France and covered it's retreat through Dunkirk. Image
