My 3x great grand parents, Victor Theophile Haydel (1835-1924) and Marie Celeste Becnel (1840-1885) were both born enslaved on the @WhitPlantation. The couple who would become the ancestors of the African American Haydel family. #DESCENDANTChallenge @Participant @HGMedia

This Christmas I learned just how hard of a worker he was. My Granddaddy used to wake up each morning at around 4 am so that he could leave the house at 5 am heading to work in Hattiesburg, MS. Hattiesburg is about 30 miles away from Richton, MS. He would often walk to work.
I thought about what that was like for him… on an every day basis and certainly as a Black man in Mississippi in the 1950s and 60s. He would repeat this process 5 days a week. And didn’t have a lot of money in spite of the back breaking hours he put in.
