I’m a very proud #DGA member, but I wonder about #AI-related details of the new AMPTP deal.
I believe directors will be dealt with in the same way as @Teamsters drivers: AI won’t replace us; there just simply won’t be a use for us in AI films.
dga.org/News/PressRele… Image
And I would like to see language related to prohibiting directors’ past work being used to train LLMs and inform the style of #AI films. The current style-theft in user-gen AI trailers is creatively violating.
I’d also hope to see a director’s casting decisions locked and not changed after the fact, via #AI.

The first time I remember hearing the word “content” was around 2005, in reference to material one would put in a website to increase traffic. Your dry cleaner, for example, would get a website and supply “assets” (logo, location photo, etc), 1/
But they then realized they needed something on there to get people to come back and keep them there. That stuff was “content.” A video, a poem, a blog post, it didn’t matter. Now why your dry cleaner needed to keep people on a website is a mystery, but they wanted it. 2/
And so, it would follow that another company, though more closely related to our business than a dry cleaners, would also want “content” for their site to get people to come back and to hold their attention. And those companies are streamers. 3/

SAG ACTORS:
I want to talk about AI and how it will affect you.
I’m a former SAG Board Member and former SAG Negotiating Committee member.
I’m also WGA and DGA. 1/
As a coder and someone with a computer science degree I want to tell you where I believe AI is going. 2/
1. AI-written scrips & digitally-scanned actors (image and/or voice). Both already exist. Some talent agencies are actively recruiting their clients to be scanned. You choose the projects and get 75 cents on the dollar. 3/

Reposting as a thread everything I wrote on instagram following the stupidest comments from @sagaftra president at the #wgastrike in regard to #actors.
1. First off- our concerns should be VERY similar to the writers. Actors, no longer receive residuals due to steaming. Soooo, we understand that writers deserve residuals but don’t think that actors do!? I die.
AI is also a threat to actors. As a soulful actor I don’t think they should be a threat, but knowing soulless decision-makers who think there is not difference of COURSE it is a threat. AI models are taking jobs away already. (A black one created by a white male even.)

I'm delighted to be an author on this paper, just published, in a journal of the Nat'l Academies of Sciences. A deep-dive analysis of US Dietary Guidelines (#DGA),🧵on findings
academic.oup.com/pnasnexus/adva…
2020 USDA "Dietary Patterns" (main diet advice) are based on systematic review of science from 2012-13. I.e., 8-9 yrs out of date when 2020 report issued.
Law says guidelines should reflect science that's "current at the time the report is prepared"
Guidelines not in compliance
2020 review of Dietary Patterns says it did "evidence scans" of the more current evidence, but this is not a recognized method (u can pubmed search it)
Also, science for majority of Birth-to-24 mo. reviews were only thru mid-July 2016.
Not "current" at time of report in 2020.

Humbled to see the #DGA published in the EU’s OJ after a speed-run negotiation in Council and EP with a great team at @DataEcoEU. Let’s unpack the four key elements in a short thread
It is about re-using public sector data that cannot be made available as #opendata without clear usage restriction, because there are interests of others at stake, using technology that can bridge between data privacy and use. Check out @FindataFi or @HealthDataHub as ex. 2/6
It wants to reduce friction cost and enhance trust in voluntary data sharing by introducing novel data sharing intermediaries: look at @DawexData, @API_Agro or the @mydataorg operators or consider orchestrators of data spaces in the context of @gaiax_aisbl 3/6

Now that we have the text of the #DMA published, let me point out a couple of outstanding provisions that have data protection implications & that show why this Regulation concerns all businesses & platform users, not only gatekeepers. Let's go 🧵 1/?
consilium.europa.eu/media/56086/st…
First of all, check out the list of Core Platform Services that may pull a business into the gatekeeper class (Art 2). Notably including web browsers, virtual assistants, & *online advertising services*, e.g. Exchanges, as long as they are provided by a business offering a CPS 2/
But this is not a thread about the threshold to become a gatekeeper (check Art 3). It just points out data protection implications of the #DMA. Of note, "consent", "profiling" in the #DMA are defined as in the #GDPR. Bonus: "non-personal" data & "data" are also defined 3/

Wishing all the best to Slovenia during its Presidency of the Council of the EU 🇸🇮❤️🇪🇺. There are huge challenges and legislative files ahead, and I sincerely hope Slovenia can make as much progress as possible. I welcome the efforts for some outlined priorities. BUT!... Thread👇
The European citizens and its institutions should feel a little uneasy since, in the words of @bpolitics, a Trump-inspired Twitter troll gets to set (although in a very limited sense) the EU agenda.

bloomberg.com/news/articles/…
The Slovenian government has followed Poland and Hungary down to the authoritarian path with "war on media", unlawfully canceling the nominations of EPPO delegated prosecutors, therefore inadmissibly undermining the independence of the judiciary.

The German Association for Asian Studies (DGA) can no longer hide behind it’s proclaimed ‘neutral’ position @feiduoli. The DGA has to address the Chinese Communist Party’s threat to #academicfreedom. We should stand in solidarity with @adrianzenz, @MareikeOhlberg and @gusiting /1
A learned society should address the threat which the CCP's political censorship poses to open-ended knowledge production. Yet in June 2020 the DGA board issued a controversial statement 'Beware the polarisation'. It's claim to 'neutrality' was widely criticised on Twitter /2 ImageImageImage

Yesterday @EU_Commission published the proposal for Data Governance Act #DGA. Let's critically unpack the file. The set of measures is a good step forward, but we are still not discussing public value and competition enough. Thread 1/12 #data #digital #GDPR
A @Deloitte impact assesment study claims that the data economy will grow to EUR 544.4 bln EUR (3.95% GDP). Previous studies by that very same company for GDPR mentioned decreases of a similar magnitude, which never happened. Instead of numbers let's talk who gets value. 2/12
First of all, #DGA lacks symmetry. It clearly aims for 'making public data available to re-use', but for private data it advocates only 'sharing between businesses'. Is data altruism enough to tap into the huge datasets held by private companies? Very risky to believe so. 3/12
