Big News! I've been awarded a £223K @UKRI_News AHRC Research Development and Engagement Fellowship to construct a digital model of the #Janowska concentration camp.

This has been 2 years in the making and I'm so excited.

I will be working with Newcastle architect Michael Brown (who did these draft visualizations) to build a Historical Building Information Model of the camp based on a variety of archival sources. Image
One set of sources is the body of drawing by architect (and #Janowska prisoner) Zeev Porath whose visual documentation is held at the @GFH_Museum. Image

The first campaign of Belisarius in Italy (535-540) was wildly successful, restoring most of the peninsula to Roman rule. Did the inhabitants of Italy welcome this? One way to answer that question is to visualize how Belisarius took cities in Italy. 🧵 #Roman #Byzantine #History A screenshot of the map pro...
Today I introduce a small digital history mapping project that does just that. The image shown in the first tweet of this thread is an overview of the map. The map shows every city or region of Italy mentioned during the campaign by the historian Procopius of Caesarea. #dh Detail of the map project i...
The pins for cities and regions are color coded based on how long it took Belisarius and the Roman army to take control of the location. Green represents no effort (instantaneous submission), yellow represents a short siege, orange a medium siege, and red a long siege.

#BengaluruFloods:
Bengaluru is a series of hills & valleys at 3100 ft above sea.

BBMP has 198 wards (soon 243).
741 sq. km. area.

80+% of city does NOT get flooded.

But if you live in a valley, chances of flood are high. Those were supposed to be lakes or paths to rivers.

#DH
...
When it rains heavily, and if you live in a low lying valley in Bengaluru, the amount of rain above your home doesn't matter.

It is the cumulative effect of rain water flowing from multiple hills nearby which floods your roads, IT parks & apartments. Water follows gravity.
...

Bengaluru has received the MOST amount of South West monsoon rain in its history, during 2022. And it has not ended yet. The next few days will be seeing massive rain.

Keep this in context when posting about #BengaluruRains.

Still majority of the city has done well.

A little #ByzantineHistory and #DH thread.
One project this semester is returning to data & visuals students & I pulled from chronicle of Theophanes.
Potentially can show a lot.
My interest: how ninth-century Constantinople saw the space of #Roman history. Image
Images all Jesse Simmons (superstar Res Assistant!).
This shows all cities/settlements in Chronicle of Theophanes.
One obvious thing (expected): East/West discrepancy.
One obvious thing (p'haps NOT expected): interest in Syria/Palestine over Greece! Image
We made the data sensitive to *when* (under what date) a city/settlement is mentioned.
Differentiates the "space" of different eras or emperors' reigns in the Chronicle.
Blue is "space" of Constantine's Rome (ca. 310-35)
Yellow is "space" of Irene & Nikephoros (ca. 780-810). ImageImage

Update. Publishers may choose English because it's a lingua franca for science, intelligible to a larger audience. Or they may do it to increase their #JIF. (And of course the two motives may be related.) Research from Brazil.

Next up at #MSUa11 -- "The Story of Accessible Art at the Digital Humanities and Literary Cognition Lab" led y Sarah Geist and Soohyun Cho.

Excited to combine learning about #DH and #a11y into one awesome session.
Panelists begin by noting that #accessible art provides opportunity to reach multiple senses and angles of engagement. It can involve the body and embodiment in exciting, interesting ways that transform art into a whole new experience! #a11y
Panelists describe a project where students wrote poetry, and then other students in art course were tasked with creating a touchable, tangible, tactile, 3D version of the poem so that you could "touch" the story. Poems were also transcribed in Braille. AMAZING. #MSUa11y

#OTD #OnThisDay from Himmler's Appt Book, June 8, 1941: Himmler arrived at the office this Sunday morning and had an intriguing meeting with SS-Obersturmbannführer Bender at 1145.
Bender was the Superior SS- and Police Judge on Himmler's staff. Himmler in particular was interested in a penal unit of the SS-Totenkopf Division.
This had been established as a punishment unit by Theodor Eicke the first Commander of the concentration camps to avoid incarcerating them in the camps themselves.

Ever wonder which archives have a capture of a given URL? What about for a specific time? Do you want to search multiple #webarchives at once?

The Memento TimeTravel service run by @LosAlamosNatLab uses the #Memento protocol for just that: timetravel.mementoweb.org

From your own machine, MemGator, by @ibnesayeed and @machawk1, also allows one to search across #webarchives using the #Memento protocol.

Thinking about how to explain #publichistory and #digitalhistory scholarship to colleagues on academic #tenure and promotion committees, especially those who are used to sole-authored books as the gold standard #dh #digitalhumanities 1/15
The core of the work is familiar: conceptualization, research, and writing (even if the ultimate presentation is not in the form of prose). The work is original and interpretive, just like traditional monographic scholarship. 2/15
But #publichistory’s attention to #sharedauthority means that the work is developed in cooperation with the public, a process that sometimes provokes conflict and controversy that the scholar has to manage. Sometimes great potential projects can’t come to fruition. 3/15
