I am so glad that researchers are interested in helping extend #STEM opportunities to #tribal students!

But please understand that we #Indigenous academics spend considerable time to cultivate relationships of TRUST. No one should expect automatic access our networks. 1/8 #phd
Some well-intentioned researchers have asked to contact my networks bc they 1) have a #diversity goal (Indigenous people as a ✔️), 2) request a letter of support, or 3) have an idea to "help us". If this is our first communication, understand that we have not yet built trust. 2/8
Know that many #Indigenous academics have been burned by ppl who take the letter of support without honoring their commitments to those who helped obtain the grant or tenureship benchmark. That's extractive, and we do not forget. (Also true for #research community engagement) 3/8

There was an announcement that @nyav_post & @GKIDSfilms cast a trans actress for the role of Hana in #TokyoGodfathers. Reading the comments I’m seeing some questions about why it matters. So here goes... (1/6)
Including #Diversity & #representation in your casting decisions is not about quotas or being PC. Every actor brings their life experience to each role. When you have a role that is part of a minority group, by casting from that group, you are enriching that role. (2/6)
The actor can offer different points of view, context & authenticity. This happened on #ASilentVoice when we cast a deaf actress, on #Funan with Khmer actors, on #Kingdom with Korean actors, & it happened o #TokyoGodfathers with @Shakeenz who is a fantastic actress PERIOD. (3/6)

South Korea’s soft power is eclipsing Japan’s as well. K-Pop, K-Beauty, cultural juggernauts like Parasite.. (meanwhile I’m not sure what’s going on with the “Cool Japan” initiative)
Contemporary Korean cuisine has definitely arrived on the global scene too. The hippest Asian restaurants in New York right now are Korean, like Atomix and Her Name Is Han, which are both fantastic ny.eater.com/2020/1/13/2103…

When they talk of #diversity they explicitly mean less white. If a panel had one blonde one brunette & one dark haired European with blue, green and hazel eyes, then it wouldn't be considered to be diverse despite it being a wonderful example of our own in-group diversity...(1)
This actual diversity is not what they're interested in To them, diversity is a racial conception even though they claim that race is a social construct. Diversity is about less whiteness in majority white nations It isn't a strength or a benefit, it is about intentional change.
Diversity is about changing the racial make up of a country. It isn't done to enrich a country or to benefit the economy. It is done with total transformation in mind. It is associated with terms like 'strength' exactly because it is a weakness which needs to be lied about.....

1/So there was lots of talk at @AACNursing #AACNdoc20 re: #Nursing #PhD pipeline, getting folx esp prelicensure students ‘excited’ about #nursingscience & the #BStoPhD

I totally revamped our #nursingresearch & #innovation course @UMassAmherst last fall to do just that

Thread ⬇️
2/ I told the Asst Dean when I took it on that regardless of the learning objectives for the course I had only 1 GOAL:

That by the end of the semester, these students would be EXCITED!-or at very least, just a little bit CURIOUS-about a career in #nursingscience & #innovation
3/ A note about context: This was a course of ~85 Accel BS students, taught in an urban campus that is geographically ~40mins drive from main @UMassAmherst campus, in the . The classroom assigned had no windows. Class ran 8am-1030am Weds, before more courses. I say this b/c....

Thread. Unpacking the new expanded #travelban targeting most #immigrants from Eritrea, Kyrgyzstan, Burma and Nigeria & nationals from Sudan and Tanzania seeking admission under the DV Lottery. 1/
#Immigrant is a term of art that applies to people seeking admission permanently. #Family is the primary way can qualify for an IV but only some relationships qualify (i.e., spouse of a US citizen). A person can also be sponsored by a US employer for an IV to fill labor needs. 2/
The #diversitylottery is a smaller but crucial #immigrant visa category to encourage immigration from low admission countries and enhance #diversity. Congress allocated 50K visas annually for this group. The new #travelban wipes out this option for nationals of all 6 countries. 3

Two days ago, someone called my son the ‘N’word. He was on the school bus. My son called me while I was leading a meeting for the residency program to tell me. He is 10 yo. The other boy is also 10. (This is a thread...)
I excused myself from the meeting to talk him through it. He was in tears. He was confused. The boy asked him, “what are you going to do if I call you the ‘N’ word, then proceeded to blurt it out.
After consoling my son I helped him create a plan of action with which he was comfortable. I hung up the phone and my eyes welled with tears.

This week is @StanfordMed’s first ever Inclusion Week. Lots of great programming, including today’s amazing talk from @PetePoullos about disability in medicine. He shared the events leading up to the day he had a bike accident and became paralyzed from the neck down.

<thread>
1/
He shared how, on the day of the injury, on top of the devastating physical injury, he was catastrophizing (his word) about losing all his friends and family as well as the manual skills he had honed as a GI fellow.

#DocsWithDisabilities

2/
He shared his journey in the early days after his injury, showing us what it was like to learn how to steer a wheelchair with his chin and work day in and day out to try to learn how to do things many of us take for granted—eating and standing.

Thread: #autism #employment statistics are unreliable but 44 years of working has taught me this: #autistic people struggle to reach their full potential unless organisational culture and environmental issues are addressed.

1/
I once did some work on job design and evaluation for the NHS. In attempting to improve #employment outcomes for #autistic people we often start in the wrong place. It’s no good trying to fit people into roles that are unsuitable, and this applies to working environments too.
2/
A degree of mutual adaptation is possible, but true workplace inclusion begins with design.
We have plenty of information about common challenges experienced by autistic people - our #sensory and #communication differences are well-defined.
So what seems to be the problem?

The upshot is, Winston Smith is gaslit to hell and back. He spends the entire novel wondering exactly what the truth is. Is it even 1984? He isn't sure. Does Big Brother actually physically exist somewhere in Oceania, or is he just a symbol? ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Yesterday I visited the cafe where my brother works. His work is a big deal. Because he has an #IntellectualDisability #DevelopmentalDisability and #InclusiveEmployment is ridiculously hard to find. We talk a lot on #MedTwitter about being #Inclusive. 1/
I am part of those conversations. They usually centre around #GenderEquity, sometimes #Antiracism, occasionally #LGBTQ+ rights, and once in a while #Disability - but under that term I almost never hear about #DevelopmentalDisability, or more importantly, how we - physicians 2/
members of society with privilege, including for many of us, our own businesses (yes, for those of you in North America, your medicine practice is run as a small business), could be actively supporting truly #InclusiveEmployment. My brother has had many jobs. Almost none of 3/

What "Women in Tech" (usually) means: it's women from historically privileged backgrounds, who for decades used that privilege to stake out comfortable careers in media and publishing suddenly discovering those skills in the information age had greatly depreciated in value.

Let’s be clear: discussion of so-called discrimination without attention to contextual power dynamics & histories of oppression is meaningless & counter-productive.
Asking privileged folks to be aware of their privilege & to be responsible for their guests’ behavior in a space for marginalized people is not discrimination. It is asking folks to attend to & be accountable for power dynamics & histories of oppression that benefit them.
Further, someone being made to feel uncomfortable is not inherently discrimination. Accountability is uncomfortable. Being made aware of (let alone relinquishing some) of your privilege is uncomfortable. One’s feelings of discomfort are not facts/evidence of discrimination.

The internet asked for it, and so we shall (hopefully) provide: A diverse expert registry for psychological science. I unveil to you the "DEEP Database" - Diverse Expertise Exists in Psychology. There are many things needed to be successful and I need your help! #PsychScience 1/n
The purpose of the database is to provide easy access to experts in psychology who rep: #PoC, #IndigenousScholar, #LGBTQ, the gender continuum, a unique voice that often goes unheard. Modeled after @womenalsoknow @POCalsoknow etc. 2/n
@womenalsoknow @POCalsoknow To get this database up & running, I need: (1) a few folks to serve as an executive committee, who will create a mission statement and moderate submissions, (2) money!!! (turns out building this sort of thing isn't cheap, more on this later), and (3) a vote on a logo. 3/n

When you're asked to talk about a social issue such as #gender and #diversity, don't use it as a platform to promote your own organization, especially if you're an org that has no specific gender focus. A thread based on a recent experience at an #InternetGovernance (IG) event.
Recently, at an IG event I was speaking at, a co-speaker on my panel on "gender and diversity in IG" made her entire talk about how the org she represents is a gender-friendly space, instead of tackling any of the clearly pressing gendered issues that plague the Internet today.
This org had done a "gender diversity" survey which the rep said showed that there were "no pressing gender concerns" at the org. Their report states that "Most agree that all genders are treated
fairly and equally in the [organization's] community." Link:

-Isms should be uncomfortable. Labeling something as a 'bias' or prejudice does not make it less #racist, #sexist, #homophobic, #ageist, #ableist, etc. Recognizing your own racism, sexism, homophobia - your own -ism, is the first step to fighting it
#diversity #inclusion 1/
Sugar-coating these words to make them more comfortable to work with does us no favors.

Back story:

During the Ignite pre-day I was very open about recognizing my own bias, specifically my own racism. I understand that it exists & I actively work against that conditioning. 2/
It is conditioning. And exists in most of us. I was just willing to admit to it in an open forum. It's sad that instead of asking how we can all get to a place where we are admitting to & working against our own isms, people get hung up on the admission & label me "a racist" 3/

Top Ten Reasons Adults without Autism Deserve AMA (Applied Misbehavior Analysis)

1. ABA is a marketing campaign built around controlling behaviors. It stifles freedom of thoughts and removes autonomy, innovation, self-determination, and creativity.
2. AMA seeks to validate each person's individual strengths, accommodate their disabilities, and provide for them a set of circumstances wherein they can thrive to meet their full potential.
3. ABA reinforces behaviors undertaken in the interest of "social consequence." Those social norms go unquestioned and maintain the status quo. The status quo maintains dominant power structures and keeps minority populations marginalized.

Thread on how #inclusion, or lack thereof, affects #Wellbeing:

⚠️: upcoming #vulnerability moment

Do you ever feel Iike you don’t belong in the spaces you occupy?
I do.
The feeling is isolating & discouraging.

The reasons why are complex, complicated. /1
#medtwitter #burnout
I will confess here that being in #dermatology and in #academia magnifies these feelings.

Being courageous, stepping outside comfort zones, making your voice heard... it’s good, necessary, but the way you’re perceived and received matters. It has impact.

It’s complicated.
/2
The cycle of self-confidence can be a positive or negative one, and often starts early in youth, affected by things such as parental upbringing, privilege, etc.

That cycle can build on itself, and have huge implications for one’s professional and personal wellbeing.
