Image

🌳 For #DNADay, we're sharing images of a clone of the Tree of Hippocrates, the original of which can be found on the island of Cos, Greece. Legend holds that Hippocrates, regarded as the father of modern medicine, taught under the shade of that island tree. @genome_gov Black and white photograph ...The tree of Hippocrates app...The clone replacement tree ...
In 1961, the Greek government, through the @GreeceInUSA ambassador, presented a Tree of Hippocrates sapling to NLM. The sapling was planted next to the new building in May 1962, thriving for more than 50 years. @historyatnih
While the original clone succumbed to a fungal disease, years of effort & research enabled NIH landscape architect Lynn Mueller to obtain the clone that was replanted #OTD in 2014: circulatingnow.nlm.nih.gov/2014/04/25/pla…

Thx for having me @kstsosie @DecolonizeDNA! Today I will tweet about how ancient DNA (aDNA) 💀🧬can be used to revisit the historical record, & reconsider the stories of underrep & minoritized communities across the Americas 🧵1/ #DecolonizeDNA #DNADay (Img: Systema Solar) Image
aDNA is the🧬that persists in ancient tissues like 🦷🦴💀, or the remains of 🦌🌿🐀🐚. It can inform us about evolution, ancient diversity & health. But bc of its age, aDNA is degraded and easily contaminated so we must handle it using lots of PPE, like this! 2/ #DecolonizeDNA Image
aDNA🦴🧬+ other lines of evidence🔍📋🏺⚰️💀can reconstruct past events & their impact in the present. This is a powerful 🦸🏽‍‍✊🏽way to understand the experiences of ppls who were marginalized, excluded or misrepresented in the written historical record 📜3/ #DecolonizeDNA #DNADay Image

National DNA Day:

🧬April 25

🧬Commemorates the day in 1953 when Watson, Crick, Wilkins, Franklin and colleagues published papers in the journal @nature on the structure of DNA

🧬Also commemorates the completion of the Human Genome Project in April 2003, took 13 years

#DNADay
DNA Double Helix:

🧬The two #DNA strands are reverse-complements

🧬Reading one strand in #reverse order and exchanging each base with its #complement gives the other strand

🧬A and T are complements, C and G are complements

DNA Sequence: AGTAGCAT
Reverse-Complement: ATGCTACT
In #Each DNA Strand:

🧬Pull the #DNA double helix apart, leaving the two single DNA strands

🧬The population (or occurrence) of every DNA sequence in that single-strand is #equivalent to the population of its reverse-complement DNA sequence in that same single-strand
