NEW: In New Orleans, a group of Black doctors risked their careers to accuse their medical school of institutional racism. The year was 2020. What would it take to prove that there was a problem — and fix it?

This is an anatomy of a racial reckoning. buzzfeednews.com/article/stepha…
Princess Dennar was the first Black woman to run a medical residency program at Tulane. She alleged that her white bosses undermined her authority for a decade-plus, trying to drive her out, and her Black trainees suffered the consequences. Her claims set off a chain of events:
Lawsuits from 3 Black women (one resolved, one lost, one pending). A survey showing that many fear that Tulane ignores racism. A boycott (#DNRTulane). Dr. Dennar's demotion—then resignation.

And now, Tulane's accreditation is at risk if it doesn’t improve its diversity climate.

The discussion about ATLAS related to #DNRTulane made me realize that all programs can and should be more transparent with the processes they use to interview and rank applicants. Here's the process @MedPedsUMN. 1/9
It was developed several years ago by @tajmustapha_md and I using a values-based process, and then modified after @joemtruglio @Sln_pwr and Dr. Dennar (among others) published this perspectives piece:connect.sgim.org/sgimforum/view… 2/9
When applications come in the APD's and I reviewed them and assign scores based on clinical grades in Medicine and Pediatrics, code Step 1 as pass/fail, and assign points for Community Service, Advocacy, and Engagement; Leadership; and Research. 3/9

1/x We, the #MedPeds21 applicants, stand with #DrDennar, the residents of @TulaneMedPeds, & students @ Tulane. Violence & discrimination were perpetrated against #DrDennar over several years while she tried to protect her residents of color who were subject to the same violence.
2/x Here are our demands of @TulaneMedicine:

1) Immediate reinstatement of Dr. Princess Dennar to her position as program director for the Tulane Med-Peds residency program.

2) Immediate resignation of Dr. Jeffrey Wiese, Associate Dean of Graduate Medical Education and DIO. Image
3/x Demands cont:

3) Immediate dismissal of Dr. Lee Hamm from duties as Senior Vice President and Dean of the Tulane School of Medicine.

@AmerMedicalAssn Can you comment on the use of the ATLAS program at #DNRTulane used to discriminate BIPOC applicants from HBCUs?
It seems that you recently wrote an article suggesting diversifying the resident workforce is important (which it is), but I’m sure the above program is not accomplishing that. What steps are our national orgs taking to address this?

I want to recenter this #Tulane conversation on #DrDenner. Last night on Clubhouse we heard from students & previous residents who spoke to Dr. Denner’s brilliance, elegance, inspiration, advocacy, & power. It brought me to tears. As they expressed how much she meant to them 🧵
When we talk about the need for representation. This isn’t just about patient outcomes, disparities, & diversity. Our #BlackPhysicians are our champions. They are our means of finding safe spaces, while being in institutions that feel unsafe, toxic, and like terror to trainees 2/
When we enter classes and rooms, we look for those Black faces in leadership. We make eye contact seeking their non-verbal clues that let us know "they see US". We wait at the end of class just to say hello, to make sure we put ourselves on their radar. 3/

#DNRTulane is rocking my timeline.

Real talk, as a residency APD, I debated whether I should comment. I don’t have these problems in my current role, so maybe I should stay quiet.

But I read the entire court doc and cried. Cuz as a Black woman in academia, I am Dr. Dennar.
This could easily be me, at any point in my career, and I would want someone to speak up for me. If we’re being honest, there’s things I’m not ready to talk about in my career that already HAVE happened before I came to Nebraska, and I had no one to speak up for me.
So yea, I’m speaking up and saying that what we are seeing with #DNRTulane is structural racism in action. What we are seeing is silencing of #BlackWomeninMedicine and #HBCU discrimination. Do not look away. This is happening. All. The. Time. Everywhere.

1/ With the epidemic of Medical Establishment-induced hemorrhaging of Black physicians, particularly, Black Women, from academic & clinical medicine, what better time than Black History Month for the entire establishment to turn the mirror on itself & ask the question:
2/ “Why are we like this?”
3/ I’m talking the same degree of root cause analyses conducted on a case of Catheter Associated UTI or Hospital Acquired decubitus ulcer. A thorough internal and external investigation to why the system is chewing and spitting out Black women physicians needs to be conducted .

(1/x) Last night the #MedPeds21 group chat was rocked with news of a sudden change in program leadership for the MedPeds residency at Tulane University. Dr. Dennar, the first Black female program director at Tulane, was no longer PD.
(2/x) This morning we were devastated to find that this unfair termination was a direct result of racism. I will include some screenshots of the court case for the lawsuit that Dr. Dennar filed against Tulane for reference.
(3/x) Told that Tulane did not want to change the face of medicine in fear of losing white applicants. Image
