I'd like to ask our provincial health officer to stop wearing performative Indigenous jewelry & accessories out of respect for this population that has been disproportionately harmed by her lax Covid policies.

i have a couple comments here and main thing: have you heard or noticed that everyone is dying and everything's fucked up and its the narrow end of the deathspiral and we're not getting out

this petty shit doesn't matter. every NP in the #DTES is fkdup LOOK AROUND
YES everyone could be way less freaked out and weird about media. the history of such interactions is not great, and has been embellished over time. everything is shit, everyone defaults to treating others like shit in order to make one's place in an intricate hierarchy of shit.
EVERYONE IS DYING. OUR LAST SMALL PLACE IS DYING

this will get worse and worse until we replace the illicit supply. worse and worse, indefinitely.

this is the future we're allowing to happen. just like we're letting the planet burn.
yes this is the scariest thing

A thread and eulogy: Today would have been Sarah DeRoo's 51st birthday but she died in December from a poisoned drug supply in the #DTES. She was smart, kind, generous and beautiful. When we met, she was a teenager who was already using opiates to moderate internal pain. Image
She was a manager in a small company. She was productive, creative and generous with friends. It is no surprise to see her sharing food with people at an enormous protest to advocate for peace in 1986. She strove to make the world a better and more caring place. Image
She was talented and creative. Together we enjoyed writing and reading poetry and listening to music. She would give me notes carefully and elegantly written by hand. She gave everything she could to her friends and the community around her. Image

[THREAD ON POLICING] March 15 - International Day Against Police Brutality AKA #IDAPB #IDAPB2021

#IDAPB was first observed in 1997 thanks to organizing by the Collective Opposed to Police Brutality (Montreal), and the Black Flag group (Switzerland).

1/21
“Cdn” media portrays police brutality as something that stops at an arbitrary border -everywhere there are police there is police brutality. During the #BLM protests of 2020, Montreal police used tear gas against protesters, a chemical weapon banned for use in warfare.

From 2000-17, the #VPD in the #DTES and the #RCMP in Northern BC (V0J) killed people at the highest rates in Canada. When police attend wellness checks, the results can be fatal. Over 70% of those killed by police in BC were experiencing a mental health crisis.

As we arrive at May, the need to ensure Vancouver's public space – and in particular it's street network - supports safe #PhysicalDistancing is as important as ever. The curve appears to be flattening in BC, but the challenges posed by #COVID19 are far from over. [Thread] /1
Back in March (which, using #COVIDTime, seems like a year ago) we came out w/recommendations for Open & Safe Streets. We’ve updated these a few times & will soon release a new version. Nicer design, more photos, illustrations by @Dereklansonlee of @pwlpartnership. Stay tuned! /2

We spend Christmastime with the people we love most.
Like we do on birthdays.
My birthday happens to be Christmas Day.
And this one - the first without my dad - is the worst one of my life.

I feel like people on Vancouver's Downtown Eastside would understand.
(Story/Thread)
At Thanksgiving, the man I was most thankful for died at 77. My dad was active, energetic, hilarious. He was the one who always caught his children and grandchildren when we fell.
We never thought *he* could fall.
As it goes with South Asian kinfolk, dozens of devastated friends and family arrived at our home within hours of his passing to comfort and feed us, wishing us strength and courage “to get through this most difficult time.”

#DTES #vanpoli This is @johannhari101 speaking last fall. via @YouTube
we are still doing #harmReduction but
>>>>>>we must expand our concept of HARM [because clearly we did not]
[because everything became much more harmful very quickly
fatal, in fact
HARM is actually dynamic, a shapeshifter.

i've had to make this point several times when speaking to council.

it would be great if nobody has to do this in the future. i'd like that. if i don't have to point this out, that would indicate to me that we've made a significant change

if we refused to wait until the obituary before acknowledging that people have inherent dignity, worth, humanity, all that
if the motivating impulse is resentment, the consequences can never be productive. it seems to me that this is a big reason why the #DTES is so utterly messed up. an endless spiral of resentment & blame & regret, such fierce desire for a past that never was

Thanks for the call @bctoday appreciate the time to talk about the @BCCSU report on "Strategies to Strengthen the Recovery System in BC." An overall review is long overdue, given the situation - #overdose #bcpoli #harmreduction
and there is much to be encouraged by in the report. Dr. Wood states clearly that recovery is a process, by definition long-term, so more is needed beyond harm reduction and acute care. bccsu.ca/news-release/n…
This is the bit that troubles me. I read the report closely and remember seeing a very early version of it well over a year ago. It's about "Therapeutic Communities":

Delightful! note that the province committed over 30mil. the nonprofit developer, vancouver chinatown foundation, raising the same. city contributing land, & more, & headaches. #vanpoli after oct, pls ask why the gov't won't meet w/ you. (can't wait.) #homeless ppl need homes,
idiots,. they can't live in your millitant post-post-modern dissent. you're using people you've coerced to be there as props. and none of you read the RZ report or attended subsequent meetings. you are not actually interested in housing at #58WHastings. clearly. #HousingJustice
you'll weaponize the whole project, and THIRTLY MILLION DOLLARS from the province, they are willing to try something here. you do this shit, do you think they'll spend another dime in the #DTES? its ok for you, b/c then you can Fight the Government! so hardcore radical.

"Based on the agenda of the City of Vancouver’s Urban Design Panel on Wednesday (June 27), the development will have 38 housing units as well as 12 micro dwelling units above commercial spaces on ground level." Those are the only details about the 'development'. #dtes #vanpoli
cw: the thread that will undoubtedly ensue may contain various not-exactly-on-topic freak-outs, references to harsh things, bitter yet nuanced literary allusions, & images i spend too much time making (gifs gifs gifs). Because this is worth it. #ThisIsWhy
This 'development', the article does not note, is beside this capital-generating structure, and an important public space. Good thing I checked, because if you read @tlupick's article, I am already pissed off about this! straight.com/news/1015846/r…
