Woke up to the news of the demise of director #KViswanath Garu. Had written this piece long ago for the leftist site, when he was awarded the prestigious #DadasahebPhalke award. K Viswanath was indeed the Renaissance Man of Telugu cinema.

Back to Vigyan Bhavan! That day, then VP Shri @MVenkaiahNaidu Garu had hosted a private party in his honour. I am hardly a ‘party person’ in the Delhi sense of it, but went and attended this. To meet the legend and thank him for his contribution to enriching our lives.

Pioneer of #Indiancinema, Dhundiraj Govind Phalke, famously known as #DadasahebPhalke, died #onthisday in 1944. He directed the first Indian feature film, #RajaHarishchandra in 1913.

Phalke directed 95 feature films and 26 short films in his 19-year career. Only one of his films, ‘Gangavataran’ (1937), was made with sound technology. The others were silent films.

Phalke’s achievements were in part due to his wife, Saraswatibai. She was his film editor and production manager. She sold her jewellery so that he could buy a camera and travel to London to learn filmmaking. Read more:

Wow! 40 years since #DadasahebPhalke awardee, director K Viswanath garu released his famous 'Shankarabharanam'! Exactly on 2nd February 1980!
Watched it countless times and had the opportunity to interview the director several times. ☺🙏

The actual idea for 'Shankarabharanam' was rooted in a much older Kannada classic by the great GV Iyer. The iconic 'Hamsageethe' based on Ta Ra Su's novel was supposed to have inspired SB.
