Remember the #Dakota38, hanged in Mankato, MN on Dec 26, 1862, under the orders of President Abraham Lincoln. It is the largest mass execution in U.S. history. Art by Travis Blackbird.
The hanging of the #Dakota38 came at the culmination of the Dakota War, which started because of a treaty broken by Congress. The Dakota people were being starved to death.

“Let then eat grass or their own dung,” Andrew Myrick, a trader & store owner who withheld their rations.
Andrew Myrick was among the first to die. He was found with grass in his mouth. #Dakota38

The Christmas season is a happy time for many. But for a Oceti Sakowin (the Great Sioux Nation) it holds painful memories. Sitting Bull was assassinated on Dec 15. The #Dakota38 were hanged Dec 26 in the largest execution in US history & the #WoundedKneeMassacre was Dec 29.
November isn’t any better. The #WashitaMassacre was on Nov 27 and the #SandCreekMassacre was Nov 29 & we will never forget the brutality that took place on Backwater Bridge just a few days before Thanksgiving. Our slaughter is tied to colonial holidays.
Lest we forget Columbus Day, a day set aside to honor a genocidal murderer who lopped off Indigenous limbs & gave Indigenous little girls to his men to be used as sex slaves.🙄

People often ask why we Oceti Sakowin do these rides & runs. If you’ve never heard of the #Dakota38 or Chief Spotted Elk & his people slaughtered during the #WoundedKneeMassacre, 1 answer is obvious. We do it to preserve our history; to pass these truths on to future generations.
We do these rides & runs to commemorate what happened to us as a people; to honor our ancestors who were unjustly murdered, and to grieve what was lost, but also to heal and to show our children and the world that we are still here, and celebrate our survival.
The #Dakota38 Memorial Ride and the Chief Bigfoot Ride for those killed at the #WoundedKneeMassacre are highly spiritual. The people who started them were spiritually inspired to do so, they were visionaries.

The #Dakota38 Memorial Riders began their trek from Lower Brule, SD this morning on horseback. They will end their ride on Dec 26, 2018 in Mankato, MN, the anniversary of the largest mass execution in US history. They honor the 38 Dakota hung that day, & their relatives.
If you are unfamiliar with the history behind the #Dakota38, here is a piece I wrote about it for Bustle. bustle.com/p/the-dakota-s…
Interesting note about this piece: Bustle added the historical photo from the Dakota War, not knowing that 1 of my ancestors is in the picture. She was taken by Chief Shakopee. She had been married off to a white man. Shakopee & Medicine Bottle were the last 2 Dakota executed.
