On this Day - 1939 - the British and French prime ministers and chiefs of staff met in the “Supreme War Council” at Abbéville in northern France. They discussed the progress of the ongoing German campaign in Poland and assistance for their ally. #Poland1939 #OTD
French prime minister Edouard #Daladier said that the German advance was proceeding “as expected”, and stressed that he had “no intention” of throwing French forces against the German western front.

This was said in spite of a previous commitment to do just that.
British prime minister Neville #Chamberlain described the French decision as “wise”, and stated that “nothing the Allies could do would save Poland”. Both Britain and France committed themselves instead to building up their own defences. #Poland1939

Depuis hier, on parle de la possible constitution d'un gouvernement "d'#UnionNationale". Il existe notamment un précédent historique, qui s'est toutefois déroulé dans des conditions (notamment institutionnelles) bien différentes et bien plus difficiles qu'aujourd'hui. Un petit 🧶
Lors des élections du printemps 1932, c'est la gauche qui emporte la majorité des sièges à la Chambre des députés. #Socialistes et #radicaux progressent nettement. Pour autant, les socialistes soutiennent sans participer. La majorité est donc difficile à trouver au centre.
Les radicaux, alliés à certains modérés du centre-droit, gouvernent mais l'instabilité est de mise. 6 gouvernements se succèdent de juin 1932 à février 1934. La #France est traversée de fortes tensions politiques alimentées par les difficultés économiques et sociales du pays.
