Every time I talk about #DarkMatter or #DarkEnergy several people jump in to say “ehhh sounds like a fudge factor/epicycles/aether!” And I get why — we’re talking about stuff we can’t directly see, it’s weird! — but, very sincerely, we did consider that. xkcd.com/1758/
There is a very small, very vocal group of astrophysicists who constantly work on alternative models in an attempt to do away with dark matter and/or dark energy. They write a lot of papers & get a LOT of press. But, they have yet to produce a model that compels the rest of us.
It’s not that we wouldn’t LOVE to have some explanation of these phenomena that does not include a component of the universe that refuses to interact with our detectors. We like catching stuff in detectors! We like being able to see stuff! But sometimes the cosmos doesn’t care.

Dark matter is out there
Find it is all we care

WIMPs, axions, dark photons...
We are looking for the latter bosons

Kinetic mixing allows the dark
to become Standard and make a “spark”!

A multilayer dielectric haloscope as detector
equipped with a SPAD as light collector.

1/ Image
A stack of dielectric layers, in total 46,
enables the dark to standard photon mix

Converted a photon?

The aspherical lens to focus it
The spad to then count the hit

As no significant excess we get
90% C.L. upper limits we set

2/ ImageImage
The name of the detector is MuDHÍ مضيء
And it’s the first dark matter experiment in the UAE

Although DM we haven’t found yet
A few goals we have already met

On our paper such achievements, we outline
though not yet peer-reviewed, you can read it on arXiv!

Nonton lagi film #TheLakeHouse".

The ATLAS Collaboration at @CERN is celebrating the results of 1,000 papers studying LHC collisions.

From the discovery of the Higgs boson to searches for new physics, these results give unprecedented insight into our Universe. Let's explore! THREAD⤵️ atlas.cern/updates/news/1…
In 2010, just 3 weeks into the first heavy-ion run, ATLAS saw an unexpectedly large imbalance of energy in pairs of particle jets created in lead-nuclei collisions. 🎇

This was the first observation of the "jet quenching" phenomenon at the LHC! cerncourier.com/a/atlas-observ…
Shortly afterwards, ATLAS scientists made the first measurement of top-quark pair production at the LHC.

This incredibly accurate result required just a few months worth of LHC data, demonstrating the extraordinary potential of the accelerator!

Fritz Zwicky is often credited for coining the term 'dark matter' but that's not quite true: the term had been in use for *decades* when he published his famous 1933 paper, and he was well aware of that. A #Thread on the early history of #darkmatter
A few months before publishing the 1933 paper, in an article on cosmic rays, Zwicky wrote in passing "according to the present estimates, the average density of dark matter in our galaxy and throughout the rest of the universe are in the ratio 100000"😯journals.aps.org/pr/pdf/10.1103…
This may sound puzzling/shocking, especially since the ratio matches modern estimates! Clearly by early 1933 he was familiar with the concept of 'dark matter', and estimates existed of both the local density, and of the average density of the universe! How can that be?

Titěrná galaxie NGC 1052-DF4 udělala nedávno v kosmologii nemalé vlny. Její pozorování naznačilo, že má kolem sebe šokantně málo temné hmoty. Nynější studie naznačuje řešení záhady – temná hmota kolem NGC 1052-DF4 skutečně chybí, ale jenom protože ji UKRADLY GALAXIE OKOLNÍ. 💥
To zjistilo pozorování týmu MIREI MONTES učiněná s pomocí Hubblea. DF4 se totiž nachází blízko masivnější galaxie NGC1035. Právě tenhle větší budulínek z menší galaxie ZŘEJMĚ ODSÁVÁ viditelnou (baryonovou) hmotu i „neviditelnou“ temnou (nebaryonovou) hmotu. 🌬

#DYK American astronomer #VeraRubin was met by skeptics in the 1970s when she proposed evidence for dark matter. She studied galactic rotation curves.

#DarkMatterDay
According to Newton's laws, when objects rotate around a common centre, the ones furthest from the centre move more slowly than those near it. Otherwise, the furthest objects would fly off into space.

✨✨#DarkMatterDay
Rubin's observations of stars in galaxies didn't match this. Either there is mass that we can't see or gravity behaves differently than we presently know. #DarkMatter is now widely accepted in the scientific community thanks to the work of Vera Rubin.

An incredible 85% of the matter in the #Universe is still “dark” to our eyes. We know it must be there, but don’t know what it is. #DarkMatter thread to follow soon... get ready😎
#PhysicsDoodle
The first hints for #DarkMatter existence can be traced back in the '30s (#Oort in '32 and #Zwicky in '33), but the problem was not given much attention until the '70s. BUT, what was "the problem"? 1/
(In the picture is the Swiss astronomer Zwicky)
In a nutshell "the problem" was that:
1) if you believed in Newton's laws about gravity
2) and you trusted your data
--> there had to be some "hidden", "dark matter" to explain the data. 2/

(1/3) I'm excited about a new paper that I've written with Carlos Blanco (@CBlanco2718), Sten Delos and Adrienne Erickcek:
"Annihilation Signatures of Hidden Sector Dark Matter Within Early-FormingMicrohalos".
#DarkMatter
arxiv.org/pdf/1906.00010…
(2/3) In hidden sector dark matter models, there can be an era in the early universe that was dominated by matter (instead of radiation, as usual). During this era, density perturbations grow quickly, leading to the formation of a HUGE population of sub-Earth mass microhalos.
(3/3) These microhalos lead to novel signatures that we can look for with gamma-ray telescopes, and provides us with a powerful way to test this interesting and exciting class of dark matter models.

(1/5) I'm excited about a new paper that I've written with @GordanKrnjaic and Sam McDermott. It combines some of my favorite things: black holes, dark matter, and the Hubble tension.
arxiv.org/abs/1905.01301
#blackholes #cosmology #darkmatter #Hubble
(2/5) If even a small number of black holes were created around the time of inflation, their relative abundance would grow as the universe expands, making it quite plausible that the energy density of the early universe was once dominated by black holes.
(3/5) If these black holes were small, they would quickly Hawking evaporate. Unlike most other particle production mechanisms, this generates all kinds of particles, no matter how feebly interacting -- a promising way to generate dark matter and dark radiation.

Okay UK government I’m with you on this one.

In case you’re wondering, it looks like the image is a modified snapshot from a simulation of how galaxies form in clusters and tendrils of #DarkMatter in the Cosmic Web. More on how these simulations work: icc.dur.ac.uk/Eagle/ A poster that says “SCIENCE IS GREAT” with small text “BRITAIN & NORTHERN IRELAND” below it. In the background is an image of a wispy-looking web of light-colored material on a dark background, with bright lights along it sort of like fairy lights. On one side of the poster is half a Union Jack. There’s small text on the bottom with the URL www.great.gov.uk and at top “Artist’s impression of the Universe, Durham Uni”
How cosmic simulations are done:
1) Write code to simulate mass & gravity for little bits of dark matter
2) Set up their distribution based on tiny fluctuations we see in THE LITERAL AFTERGLOW OF THE BIG BANG
3) Let code run for a while & it looks like what we see in the sky 🌌
To emphasize how cool this is: we are starting with tiny tiny variations in microwave light that comes to us from when the cosmos was still basically ON FIRE from the Big Bang and we use some math and out comes THE DISTRIBUTION OF ACTUAL GALAXIES IN SPACE 🤯

Here we go, time for my first thread about a new paper, out today on your local arXiv server! #sciencetwitter #physics #hepph #darkmatter #cosmology #earlyuniverse #plasma arxiv.org/pdf/1902.08623…
1/ Backstory: we've been looking for dark matter for a long, long time and we haven't found it. We're pretty sure it's a particle based on the concordance of evidence from a wide variety of astrophysical environments, but we're not sure what kind of particle it is.
2/ Since we've been looking pretty hard in a couple of particle mass ranges (most notably we've been looking for dark matter particles that are heavier than a proton) and since we haven't found it, folks are starting to wonder if other dark matter masses are possible/interesting
