No dijo eso.
"He who is not content to look, like a savage, at the phenomena of nature as disconnected, cannot any longer believe that man is the work of a separate act of creation... Man is the co-descendant with other mammals of a common progenitor".
“The Descent of Man” p807.
Específicamente evitó discutir el tema en su libro, en 1861: "science as yet throws no light on the far higher problem of the essence or origin of life".
Como científico riguroso que era, no se iba a poner a especular sobre cosas que no se podían explorar experimentalmente.

On #DarwinDay it is wonderful to anticipate the fast progress coming to psychiatry as it discovers its missing foundation in evolutionary biology.

The day between #DarwinDay and #ValentinesDay gives an opportunity to respond to questions about
what #evolution offers to #psychiatry and
why I think it will bring fast progress.
Painful emotions, especially anxiety & depression, are by far the most common reasons people seek help. An evolutionary perspective recognizes emotions as special states shaped by natural selection along with control systems that express them in situations where they are useful.

Bugün Darwin’in doğum günü ve uluslararası Darwin günü. #DarwinDay
👉12 Şubat 1809 doğumlu Darwin, 1858 senesinde Alfred Wallace ile doğal seçilim üzerine kitaplarını, 1859 senesinde de On The Origin of Species isimli en önemli kitabını yayınladı.

1/3: Should have shared this yesterday for #DarwinDay, from @NCSE.

Because evolutionary theory impacts & underlies so much of our lives - how we practice medicine, how we build our environments,...

2/3: how we live & interact w/ other humans, how we co-exist w/ other species, how we most effectively learn at different stages of our lives, and so much more - a basic understanding of it should be considered a necessary life skill.

#WhyTeachEvolution #DarwinDay #ksed
3/3: Maybe even a bit more than a basic understanding.

It's not hard to argue many of our current problems are at least partially the result of ignorance of evolutionary theory and it's applications to our day-to-day.

Today in pulp, as it's #DarwinDay, l ask the question: should we fear The Singularity - a super-intelligent artificial intelligence that will evolve to rule over us forever more?

I'm gonna say no for this one...
The technological singularity is a hypothetical point in the future when technological growth becomes uncontrollable and irreversible, resulting in unfathomable changes to human civilization.
In short an upgradable intelligent agent would enter a "runaway reaction" of self-improvement cycles: an intelligence explosion would occur resulting in a powerful superintelligence that would, qualitatively, far surpass all human intelligence.

My book "Ask An Ocean Explorer"(*) is out in 30 days (on 21 Feb).

So for the next 30 days, I'll be sharing some of the wonders & history of exploring the deep here, in #30daysofdeep

(*<cough>available for pre-order, e.g. amazon.co.uk/Ask-Ocean-Expl…; also for Kindle, & audio book)
On this day, 59 years ago, two people reached the ocean's deepest point for the first time.

Here's a wonderful account by one of them, Don Walsh, in his own words: scientificamerican.com/article/diving…

And here's some archive newsreel footage:

Here's Gorringe Bank, a twin-peaked seamount near Portugal that rises from ~5 km deep to ~50 m deep, taller than Mont Blanc in the Alps. Home to >800 species, from deep-sea glass sponges to kelp.

Discovered by USS Gettysburg in 1875 under Capt Henry Gorringe.
