Our new paper shows how 1 in 5 people categorically misinterpret bar graphs. A thread...

Press release: wellesley.edu/news/journalis…

Paper: jov.arvojournals.org/article.aspx?a…

#DataViz #DataJournalism #BarBarGraphs
When shown a bar graph that depicts average values, 1 in 5 people think that the bar's tip is the outer limit of the data, rather than the balanced center point (the average), as if every individual value was below-average. We call this error the "Bar-Tip Limit Error."
How could decades of graph interpretation research have missed such a severe error? Our experience in psychological measurement led us to ask a more concrete, direct, detailed question than prior work.

A Bloomberg News investigation of more than 49,000 borrowers of CBILS shows that millions of taxpayers' money has been blindly loaned to companies with dubious credentials. This is the first large-scale investigation into CBILS: bloomberg.com/news/articles/…

The review shows that a business controlled by one of the U.K.’s richest financiers, John Beckwith, received a taxpayer-backed relief loan for about 3.7 million pounds — even though the company hasn’t been trading for years.

Hi folks. I’m Disha. I’m a data reporter who investigated police use of force for 16 months.

I don’t usually publicly ask for help, but I need a job in the next 56 days or I won’t be eligible to work for 6-12 months.

Threading portfolio, jobs I can legally take, details. 1/n
My best work to date: force.nj.com, an award-winning database on police use of force in New Jersey, which, after publication, the attorney general purchased from us to use as a model for the state’s database. 2/n
I architected the database to make sure manually inputting over 70k records would yield usable results, just as I knocked on doors in towns with high rates of police use of force to do shoe leather reporting. Read the story: bit.ly/race-uof 3/n

#Ackshawlly, Trump won white women with college degrees by 29 points in Georgia in 2016 according to the exit polls, so that would be a spectacularly good performance by Abrams.
Granted the exit polls are a little screwy on education demographics so it may or may not actually have been that much. But you should probably look up that stat first before you tweet about the Matist number like it's bad for Abrams.

I'm going to share a #datajournalism secret with you: white people in the South are conservative.
