The goats of a Christmas, passed
And yes, I did just go out for a drive around #DavisCA looking for goats in order to make this joke ...
I note - I was all decked out in my Christmas themed outfit (alas, trimmed my large beard a few weeks ago to get a better mask fit thanks to pointers from @CorsIAQ) - but it was raining so hard I did not get out of my car to do a selfie with the goats

Well, from what I can tell, most people, institutions & officials in the USA are in denial regarding the oncoming tidal wave of Omicron infections that are (1) already happening & (2) will soon massively increase. Come on everyone - we need to slow this down.
1. Limit indoor gatherings.
2. Especially stop maskless indoor activities. JFC people.
3. If you have to be indoors w/ people outside your household: ventilate, filter, mask.
4. Boost
5. Test early and often.
6. Quarantine w/ any hints of exposure / symptoms.
Sadly, a huge part of the problem is vaccinated folks thinking they cannot contribute to COVID spread. Well, this concept was wrong in May when the CDC pushed it. and it was wrong in July and it is really fu#(!@( wrong now.

It was quite warm and sunny today around #DavisCA and alas I did not get out in the AM but managed to head out to #YoloBypass in the early PM. I went on a short walk to a spot I knew would be relatively shady. And along the way saw a few nice things like: 1/n
And then I got to this semi-shady spot with a little water hole and waited. And I was rewarded. First, with an otter swimming by. 2/n
And then what I think was a muskrat waddled by (not 100% sure about the ID). 3/n

Reading: Children now playing 'huge role' in spread of COVID-19 variant, expert says abc7chicago.com/health/kids-no… via @abc7chicago
Given this, it is really ridiculous that schools are reopening all over the country but many, including those in my town #DavisCA (the @DJUSD) are not going to require testing. We have to have all the kids being tested regularly on top of doing other measures to limit spread
Attention @GavinNewsom @DJUSDSuptBowes - I really don't care what the excuses are, the only way we keep a lid on things in schools is if we know what is going on, and the only way we know what is going on is via testing

Important information for those at @ucdavis and in #DavisCA and nearby:

Coronavirus B.1.351 Variant (sometimes called the South Africa variant) Confirmed in Yolo County ucdavis.edu/news/detection…
Initially flagged in a positive sample by genotyping at @genomecenter, sample was then sequenced and sequence analysis confirmed it being assigned to the B.1.351 variant group (and, well, that is what I was working on all weekend so there you go ...)

Really just so proud of all the people at @ucdavis and at @HealthyDavis and #DavisCA involved in this. And happy to play a supporting role.

A California College Tries to Shield an Entire City From Coronavirus nytimes.com/2021/01/30/us/…
Incredibly thankful to my lab manager and friend @davidacoil for his amazing efforts on this project, helping set up the testing, working with @HealthyDavis, managing procurement of supplies (which he loves), and just working his tail off on this. #HealthyDavis
Also incredibly impressed with the @genomecenter and @michelmorelab and others for getting the high throughout testing up and running and working very well #HealthDavis
