@UKHSA data today marks significant milestone. Since start of pandemic NHS has treated over one million hospital patients with COVID-19. Although we've returned, in many ways, to pre-pandemic ways of living and working, NHS still has major challenges from COVID. New🧵1/18
Firstly, on @mariecurieuk’s #DayOfReflection, I want to remember those who have lost loved relatives and friends over the course of the pandemic. Important we remember them appropriately. Particularly thinking of NHS staff who lost their life in line of duty. 2/18.
Since 2020 NHS has managed a series of successive waves of COVID. Between then and now, the number of inpatients with COVID has fluctuated between 3,800 and 16,500. During the height of the pandemic, we were admitting 8 hospitals’ worth of patients per day due to COVID. 3/18

I have spent the past weeks reflecting on this past year. It really has been a whirlwind of mini events.
Although there has been a lot of awful scenes and loss, we must not forget the massive scenes of kindness and generosity we have seen over the past year.

Remembering the lady who popped to Morrison’s (at a time when popping to Morrison’s meant queuing for an hour) to buy me this after overhearing me telling a colleague that my wife was at home isolating and upset that she ran out of her go to comfort food
Remembering the army major banging on the front door of the pharmacy when we were coming in early to catch up everyday to offer us as many guys as we needed to help out with deliveries and crowd control

I am going to write a thread where I praise Boris Johnson

Our herd leader
Our Prime Minister
Our People's Prime Minister
Our Lion King

Where I thank him for being an inspiration
This heart-warming video of him talking to schoolchildren about what inspired him to be a politician

Inspired me to write this tribute to Boris

The Lion King reference wasn't mine

It was @halfon4harlowMP

#DayOfReflection I treated hundreds of Covid patients in the last 12mo. I was the named consultant for 184 who died, equals to 16.2% of all Covid deaths in my Trust
I remember my colleagues from different specialties who volunteered to work with me on the pop-up EoL Covid ward, providing top class palliative care. At that time little was known about Covid, but it didn’t stop us from doing our best. That’s professionalism & bravery.
I remember many did not have prior palliative background but we up-skilled quickly. That’s adaptability. @NUHEOLC @HcopTeam

It is important to remember that grief isn’t all about sorrow

You can only experience grief if you have experienced love

Indeed, grief is the collateral damage of love

The more deeply you have loved, the more painfully felt the grief #CovidMemorialDay #COVID19 #DayOfReflection
