At 8:45 I arrived on campus and the Advanced Technology Institute which is here I'm based. The ATI is an amazing interdisciplinary workplace and has a great research culture which I love

I did some admin at my desk in the open office until 9:30 when I headed down to the focused ion beam lab. Being a researcher involves more emailing than I anticipated when I applied for a PhD!

@science_a_thon This picture was from earlier in the morning - I was being disciplined and not letting Twitter distract my time until I got my hour of writing in 😜. Coincidentally, #ScienceAThon coincides with Week 1 of a 14-day writing challenge from the @NCFDD.

My #dayofscience began in France...virtually, that is! I'm on the scientific advisory board for @ENGIEgroup who's aiming to be the first carbon-neutral energy company. We met in person last year (below) but this year was a virtual MS Team mtg with colleagues from around the world
Next, I headed over to Ohio to talk to the Mid-Ohio Regional Planning Commission about mitigation and climate resilience. It was a hybrid event with the host being live and me online. Lots of questions + great discussion!

When geomorphologists predict how landscapes will erode and evolve, we’re usually averaging over pretty long timescales (>1000s of years) and large areas (>100s of square miles). The equations and models we use are good at capturing changes at these scales!

But if you zoom in to smaller scales, many of the natural processes that move sediment and cause erosion—like tree throw!—are actually pretty irregular and some just aren’t described accurately by the physics in our model frameworks.

Making a twitter list of physical, natural and social scientists who do climate - now over 1,400 strong! - has been an interesting social experiment. Here is the list, and what I've learned! twitter.com/KHayhoe/lists/…
1/ I thought I knew most of the people doing some type of science on twitter - and I was WRONG! I was only following about 1/5 of the list before I made it, and I still find more new faces and names every day.
2/ The vast majority of us on twitter are the younger crowd - doctoral students, postdocs, assistant professors. We start to tail off on the associate level and only a few very senior folks are here (but it's fun to see them!).
