Good morning everyone and welcome to Day Four of what should be the hottest #deaf #deafed topic in Canada. Even the Americans are watching this tribunal. On the docket today are two Deaf specialists.
First off is Tammy Vaters. I apologize for misspelling as it tends to correct to Vaders. That is the Educational Assistant or Student Assistant. She was trained and experienced in Ontario and knows how to do her job. Yes I confirmed this beforehand.
Then in the afternoon is expected to be Dr. Kristin Snoddon. She is a doctor with her areas of Expertise
Inclusive education policy; Sign language planning and policy in early childhood; Literacy; Bilingualism; Disability studies - her bio from TMU.

1. Howdy folks!

I'm pleased to announce the "digital premiere" of my newest #deafed video. [ASL, with English subs and image descriptions.] #deafpedagogy

"The Pragmatics of Visual Tool Design A How to and Why do Guide for Practitioners of Deaf Pedagogy"

2. In this video, Part 1 - WHAT? discusses a general analysis of visual tools with plenty of examples drawn from deaf studies domains.

In Part 2 - HOW? I analyze the research literature on deaf pedagogy with visual tools, demonstrate an analysis of a master teacher's use of VTs.
3. Throughout, interactive "Pause and Reflect" sections are included. This is ideal for either self-guided study, or for use in classrooms as a "module" with deaf educator candidates and their professors in teacher preparation.

Please share widely and use in good health.

Starting a thread describing my research to address the #DeafEd #TeacherShortage

(Photo has alt text description)

2/We know there’s a #DeafEd #TeacherShortage...but what do we DO?? #scicomm

My research comprehensively looked at all teachers of the deaf/hard of hearing (TODHH) in one state. Where do they work? Where were they trained? What are their challenges?
3/ What are THEIR ideas for addressing the #DeafEd #TeacherShortage (hmm...asking teachers their opinions on education issues. Novel concept🧐)

So ready for this amazing #HDLS14 panel on "Race, racism and racialization in sign language research" organized by @linasigns and @jaceyhill starring @_CooLDP @munimuninianna and Dominic Harrison (are you on Twitter Dominic?)
.@linasigns starts of with a powerful reminder and acknowledgment about the constant presence of violence and oppression against BIPOC people in this country and how BIPOC scholars are forced to exist in spaces which thrive on white supremacy and settler colonialism #HDLS14
UNM's @_CooLDP situates us within Intersectionality Frameworks such as #BlackFeministDisbility (Bailey& Mobley 2018) #BlackDeafFeminist (Chapple 2019) & outlines different branches of #CriticalRaceTheory showing each highlights different facets of intersectionality #HDLS14

Check out this paper @wyattehall and @jmhenner and I wrote about using sign language interpreters in #deafed with children who have experienced or are at risk for language deprivation.… Here is a summary: 1/18
tl;dr Deafness ≠ language deprivation. Educating kids who are deaf ≠ educating kids with language deprivation. We argue that sign language interpreters are not a good accommodation for kids at risk for language deprivation, and may actually do more harm than good. 2/18
Deafness is an audiological status. Language deprivation is an acquired consequence of limited language input during early childhood. Deaf kids need access to education in whatever language(s) they know. Kids with or at risk for language deprivation need language education. 3/18

Watching the live webinar from @InfantHearing on how to make reading time a meaningful moment for your DHH child. #deafed #reading #language #LSL
Live tweeting cool points from the webinar!
Reading is like broccoli! What?! We know broccoli, and reading, is good for you but we don't always make time for it. Great analogy!
Radio (self) talk: This can happen with books, in the car, while grocery shopping, at grandma's house...Talk about what is happening! "Wow! Look at that silly cat on the cover! I can't wait to read this book." "Look at that house with the bright purple door. That is different!"
