#Dearfarmers So lets talk about careless mistakes people make in farming.
A simple Thread worth your time.

- Lack of proper fencing.
We invest thousands or millions into farming but fail to impose proper security measures around the farm.
#WednesdayWisdom
#BBIReport #farming
Frequent theft and farm invading by livestock or wild animals results from simple ignorance or failure to protect your office. (farm)
Fencing is therefore a very important aspect that you should consider before venturing into farming
Lack of financial knowledge and risk management.

Farmers ought to know the estimated profit margin before investment. Don't be so much aggressive on decision making at the start and have less equity left out. Invest only whatever you are capable of.

Grapes are much easier to manage and looking at how they grow and the space they occupy then clearly, you can actually intercrop them with seasonal legumes like beans...
You shouldn't intercrop them with crops that need alot of water.
Introduce intercropping between 1-2 years.

Brooder and Chick Mortality

Thread.

Farmers, especially newbies, experience high chick mortality during brooding. This ranges from 1 to 100%!
Cases of farmers losing all chicks during brooding are many.

This can be avoided.

Brooding.
Raising up your chicks in controlled environment from day 1 to about 4 weeks is critical.
Brooders should have cylindrical walls. Use plywood as it can bend well without snapping.
Use a good source of heat such as brooder clay pots or jikos or heat lamps.
Each source of heat should serve about 200 to 300 chicks and be placed at the centre of the brooder.
Don't use wood shavings for day old to 4 days. Spread newspapers or cartons on the floor. Have sufficient feeders/drinkers, at least 1 for every 20 chicks. Provide light at night

The meat goat business is one area you can exploit, given the deficit in red meat supply in Kenya and globally.

MEAT BREEDS
The available indigenous breeds are the Small East African and the Galla Goat. They adapt to many climates.

They also have good characteristics and are preferred for meat. Their high adaptability means they can do well in many parts of Kenya.
No particular colour defines the Small East African Goat as it comes in various shades. Bucks attain live weight of 30 to 40kgs, does 25 to 30kgs
Have slow growth and low meat production so meat is the best option. They are hardy, survive in tough environment and resistant to parasites and diseases.
