Today we watched the 1st day's proceedings today of @ForWomenScot taking @scotgov to court. The topic is really very niche but will impact us all if the Judge rules for @scotgov (we won't know the outcome for at least a month or 2) so let's share what we learned 1/
Let's say you are male, called John, & you feel uncomfortable in your body for some reason. You acquire a Gender Recognition Certificate (GRC) that allows you to change the sex on your birth certificate to female. We'll call this John's "certificated sex" 2/
Scottish Gov says that this GRC makes John female in ALL respects. So you ask for a female Doctor to do your smear & John turns up to do it because his certificated sex is now female. You attend a rape counselling session (job description was for females only) & John runs it 3/

@ForWomenScot won last time & the ruling said that no-one can redefine "woman" in law away from that defined in the Equality Act. This time they are challenging whether a Gender Recognition Certificate (GRC) can change a person's sex in ALL respects (@scotgov says yes!) 2/
This case is directly relevant to legislation currently making its way through the Scottish Parliament, the Gender Recognition Reform Bill. The GRR Bill would allow a male to acquire a GRC on their say so & expect to be treated as female in law in ALL respects 3/

I see the witch prickers continue to harass & abuse @GussieGrips.
Scotland is a basket case when it comes to freedom of speech & women’s rights.
This regression has taken place under the watch of a female FM who has actively encouraged the vilification & dehumanisation of women.
No one knows this better than Joanna Cherry. The ongoing harassment of Scotland’s most capable & successful MP is disgraceful.
The FM continues to ignore the vendetta ongoing for years against JC.
Her silence has brought shame on our nation.
#DeedsNotWords
Despite women pleading to be heard the FM has left women in no doubt that not only are their concerns “not valid” but following her emergency broom cupboard broadcast-opinionated women are not valid or valued in Scotland.
Know them by their deeds.

Tomorrow, we hear the first #QueensSpeech this decade & the last before #COP26 climate summit

New legislation announced could be make or break for climate, nature and communities across the UK

Here are my #FiveToThrive Bills for a fairer, greener future 🧵👇
A #GreenNewDeal with the scale and ambition of @POTUS plan to upgrade America would:
✅Create millions of good green jobs across the UK
🏡 Improve everyday life
🌍Set us on a path to a greener, fairer future
@labourlewis and I have a #GreenNewDeal bill that's ready to go
The #CEEBill is the framework we need to tackle the climate & ecological crises together. It would commit the UK to:
🌡️ Doing its fair share to limit temperatures to 1.5 ºC
🌳 Protecting and restoring nature
🙋 Creating a Citizens’ Assembly to put decision in the hands of people

It's naïve to think the police NEVER misuse violence - it's well documented.

Short THREAD on #militant #suffragettes, who helped women get the vote

And let's not forget the brutal miner's strike, or the poll tax riots, which helped end the draconian tax, & get rid of Thatcher. ImageImage
On Black Friday, 18 November 1910, suffragettes were kicked to the ground, punched, & their breasts were pinched.

Independent newspapers, later banned by the government, clever photo journalism, & mass protests all brought the cause for women's rights to the public eye. Image
Elsie Flint, a militant suffragette, recalled in the 1970s: "People laugh & say what ridiculous things to do, but it was never done for fun. They had to get the notice of the public and that was their way of doing it."

The slogan #DeedsNotWords was adopted. Image

Hi @JamesCleverly, this morning you said you can't investigate new MP Jamie Wallis over his links to a 'sugar daddy' website exploiting young woman because you "don't have the full details of the business relationship".

Well I'm happy to help.
Sugar-Daddy.net was run by SD Billing Ltd. web.archive.org/web/2010030505…

SD Billing Ltd was set up and owned by Fields Group Ltd. beta.companieshouse.gov.uk/company/059641…
Fields Group Ltd was and is still owned by your new MP, Jamie Wallis. beta.companieshouse.gov.uk/company/057284…

It's pretty simple. Now how about you investigate him stop delivering the "line" and show how much you actually disagree with this kind of activity #deedsnotwords

Happy #IWD2019!

What will you do to make our world a more equal place?

I will ask more women to stand for election.

Share this & reply with your pledge.

Some ideas to get you started 👇

#BalanceforBetter #EqualPower #DeedsNotWords #AskHerToStand (1/n)
Count the number of women standing as candidates or elected to office, speaking at events & writing articles.

Challenge parties, organisers and media outlets when they are not representative.
No one should miss out on education because they can’t afford sanitary products.

So buy extra when shopping & donate to a foodbank.

And write to your MP to ask them to support girls all across the UK getting free sanitary products in schools, colleges & unis.
