So that tweet did some numbers overnight 😱

Welcome to the new followers! Did you read something that made you think about the #deepsea in a new way & want to see some deep sea science in action? Have I got some live ROV dive sources for ya!
The big 3 groups doing live broadcasts of deepsea science are @EVNautilus, @SchmidtOcean, and @oceanexplorer. @Ocean_Networks also occasionally broadcasts their cabled observatory servicing cruises. Check them out! Summer is when scientists do a lot of work at sea!
And if you, like me, are concerned about the underfunding of #deepsea research in the US, you can contact your state's congresspeople/senators and tell them to improve funding for @NSF, which is the main grant-providing agency for deep sea science here.

Okay, so let's talk about this, bc everyone is acting like this is some kind of clue that the vehicle was doomed from the getgo. Brief thread here.
You can't just *buy* submersible systems off the shelf. Most research submersible systems are built ✨by the org that owns the vehicle✨ The presence of a video game controller is not the "gotcha" everyone thinks it is.
Guess what? #HOVAlvin is driven with a very basic joystick. #ROVJason is driven with a joystick. The Japanese ROV Kaiko is driven with a joystick.

The fact that these guys are using a game controller isn't this weird thing folks are making it out to be.

2/“By drilling into sediment cores 100s of feet beneath Antarctica’s sea floor, scientists discovered that during previous periods of global warming—3M & 15M yrs ago—loose sediment layers formed & slipped, sending massive tsunami waves to the shores of S America, NZ & SE Asia.”
3/“Weak layers beneath 3 submarine landslides, consist of…oozes & glaciomarine diamicts. The lithological differences, from glacial to interglacial variations in biological productivity, ice proximity & circulation, caused changes in deposition preconditioning slope failure.”

Tomorrow the @EUCouncil will adopt a set of conclusions on international ocean governance and #DeepSeaMining.

Their decisions will shape the future of the #DeepSea.

EU Member States must stand against #DeepSeaMining to protect the world’s last true wilderness from harm. ImageImage
We welcome @EUCouncil steps to support stronger regulations, higher environmental standards & a precautionary principle on potential future #DeepSeaMining.

But more ambitious targets & proper commitments are needed to #DefendTheDeep from those who want to destroy it for profit. Image
Surprisingly, the same @EUCouncil called for a more ambitious position on #DeepSeaMining in 2020.

Yet now #EU Member States want to cut back on ambition just as #COP15 talks on new global #biodiversity targets are underway.

This must not happen.

1/n Super proud of work published this week by @anzheng25 et al. in @NatMachIntell using #deeplearning to identify sequence context features predictive of transcription factor binding. rdcu.be/cdMmE Some key points:
2/n The main idea: TFs typically bind short motifs of 6-12bp. But only a small fraction of motifs in the genome are actually bound. How well can the question of “to bind or not to bind” be predicted by sequence context (1kb) around the motif using #DeepSea style CNNs?
3/n Pretty well! For most TFs we tried, we could predict whether its motif was bound based on ChIP-seq very well (mean auROC ~0.94) just from local sequence context

The Vast Majority of the Deep-Sea Remains Completely Unexplored: A Thread 1/n
Although the earliest interest and sampling in the deep sea occurred in the late 1800’s, a majority of deep-sea exploration did not occur until after the 1960’s. 2/n
The current amount of sampling and exploration of this great environment is without precedent. Despite this, new species and new habitats are constantly being found 3/n

The Guinness Book of World Records has an entry for biggest male-female difference: the deep-sea angler fish, also known as the giant sea devil. #deepsea
Females of the largest species, Krøyer's deep sea angler fish, Ceratias holboelli, reach 1.2 m (3.9 ft) in length. Males, by contrast, are much smaller, reaching 14 cm (5.5 in)
The female is about 500,000 times heavier than the male.

Yesterday, on the 1st day of the UK's #COVID19 lockdown, I started posting a daily #deepsea fact on my instagram (@diva_amon) to help amaze/excite/distract. Will cross-post them here also. Feel free to add comments/questions/etc. & I'll try to get to them #DivasDailyDeepSeaFact
DAY 1: The test used to diagnose #COVID19 & other pandemics was developed with the help of an enzyme isolated from a #microbe found in #DeepSea #HydrothermalVents & freshwater hot springs.

DAY 2: #DeepSea life can be slow. Case in point: the Greenland #shark (Somniosus microcephalus) can live for >400 years & only becomes sexually mature at >150 years old. Yes, it took me a grand total of 2 posts to start talking about sex. I blame @Marahh2o. Video: @oceanexplorer

Our paper <Marine connectivity dynamics: clarifying cosmopolitan distributions of marine interstitial invertebrates and the meiofauna paradox> is out in @Mar_Biology 😁

1/n Here's a summary of what we found and discussed (and a personal significance at the end):
* We did a literature survey and analyzed 700+ contributions
* Despite including keywords such as 'molecular OR cryptic OR ... dispersal OR phylo* OR biogeo* OR distribut*' only 7 contributions (>1%) focused on evolutionary biology!
2/n
* Ecology and Taxonomy made up nearly 95% (488; 235 respectively) ... with a majority of contributions focusing on nematodes and arthropods (harpacticoid copepods).
* Paleontology, Development and Physiology added up to only 31 contributions!
