Every winter, #DelhiPollution spikes drastically, partly due to the stubble burning activities in neighbouring states.

Now, @NASA has captured satellite images depicting stubble plumes gushing towards #Delhi.

Read: weather.com/en-IN/india/po…

#StubbleBurning is the process whereby farmers get rid of crop residues by torching them up, so as to create space for a fresh batch of crops. This annual activity leads to the exacerbation of recurring seasonal pollution.

📸: Piyal Bhattacharjee/TOI, BCCL, Delhi
The images captured by @NASA underline the magnitude of the #StubbleBurning problem by depicting a massive ‘river of smoke’ originating from fires in Punjab, Haryana and even north Pakistan, stretching towards Delhi.

While, central govt is busy in farm bills; Delhi govt could use this opportunity to sit across table with farmers and can come to consesnsus on providing enablers (machines, chemicals) to not burn stubble next year onwards.

So, I had this CRAZZY idea for combating the #DelhiPollution problem.

Interested?

And the answer is:

Celebrate Uttarayan in Delhi - bigger and better than ever.
Yes. Uttarayan.

Charcoal and Activated Carbon can adsorb/absorb fumes, odour, pollutants, etc. Such filters are readily available for indoor use.

Manufacture kites laden with Charcoal or Activated Carbon.
The entire population of Delhi flies these Charcoal or Activated Carbon kites on the 2 days of Uttarayan and Vasi Uttarayan.

Lo and behold, smog cleared, pollution under control.

Celebrate the festival in a grand manner and reap the benefits.

A #thread on #DelhiPollution.

The air pollution levels have shot back up in the Delhi area. Many people have been reporting sickness and headaches - but the group most at risk are children from poorer backgrounds.

Read this thread for more #DelhiAir:
We went to a slum in North Delhi last week to see the impact the sky high pollution levels were having on residents there. One NGO worker estimated that 90% of the children there had some sort of breathing problem, including pneumonia.

#DelhiAir #DelhiPollution
At the slum I met Shabhana with her three month old twins. She told me both have pneumonia, and blames the #DelhiPollution.

She's renting a nebuliser (she can't afford to buy one), so she can pump medicines to their lungs.

"The medicines aren't working, we're desperate."

When a toxic smog darkened the skies over Delhi last weekend and air pollution peaked, Nabeela Moinuddin and Fareeda - living on opposite sides of the economic divide - were panic-stricken for their families.

A 🧵on @neha_5 & my story on #DelhiPollution

in.reuters.com/article/uk-ind…
These are just two stories from New Delhi's toxic bubble, where more than 20 million people trapped and helpless every winter.

The culprits: Burning of crop residue in farm belts surrounding Delhi, industrial and vehicular pollution, and dust from construction projects.
Then there's also low winds and colder air that comes down from the Himalayas.

Here's a useful @ReutersGraphics viz by Anand Katakam on just how bad it gets around this time of the year - every year.

The #DelhiAirEmergency has brought #AirQualityIndex and #DelhiPollution infamy.

This thread enumerates problems, approaches and solutions for Delhi based on experiences with state, market and society.

The Keeling curve has steadily crossed 450 and unprecedented urbanization increasingly looks like the future of humanity will live in cities. The sustainability of natural resources of water, air, land and energy will be critical to our survival.
In India, the nation has power, states have money and cities/villages have the problems. This mismatch must be corrected by effective interventions in honest politics, effective governments, market, academia and civil society. Problems must be met with resources and intent.
