(NRC). Moshood Kashimawo Abiola (MKO) was the candidate for SDP while Bashir Tofa represented NRC. Abiola, a South Weaterner, had gained wide popularity through oil and gas and other chains of businesses and was greatly loved by the people. Nigerians from North,South, East and
West came out en masse to cast their vote for Abiola regardless of language, religious , regional lines and he had a landslide victory.

We can't celebrate our nation's democracy without acknowledging where we are coming from and the prices many have paid to usher us into a democracy. Are we really there yet? Obviously not, but we're on a journey and we can't go back.
There's still a lot to be done if we will enjoy the true dividends of a democratic nation. As we celebrate today, it's my prayer that justice, respect for human rights and peace will become the order of the day everywhere.
To build a nation that we will be proud of, let's not abdicate our responsibilities, but courageously and purposefully make our contributions. Happy Democracy Day. #DemocracyDay
