A landmark court case is a case of legal importance, usually settling a signficant matter, and which decision is used and followed by the judiciary to decide cases dealing with the same issue. Here are 26 important Supreme Court Landmark Decisions over the years.1/28 #SCOTUS
Marbury v Madison: judicial review created; The act and the ensuing last-minute appointment of new judges by outgoingJohn Adams (the so-called “midnight judges”) were decried by the incoming president, Thomas Jefferson.

Plessy v Ferguson: “separate but equal”; In the pivotal case of Plessy v. Ferguson in 1896, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that racially separate facilities, if equal, did not violate the Constitution. 3/28 #BackToSchool #SCOTUS #DemsWork4USA

#BackToSchool The Supreme Court of the United States (SCOTUS) is the highest court of our land. The 9 justices decide the constitutionality of our laws and they hear select cases as a court of last appeal. Since Presidents pick nominees, elections & voting matter a great deal!
Article III of the Constitution establishes the federal judiciary. Article III, Section I states that "The judicial Power of the United States, shall be vested in one supreme Court, and in such inferior Courts as the Congress may from time to time ordain and establish."
2/19
Although the Constitution establishes the Supreme Court, it permits Congress to decide how to organize it. Congress first exercised this power in the Judiciary Act of 1789. This Act created a Supreme Court with six justices & established the lower federal court system.

#BackToSchool Conservatives like to insist that they revere the U.S. Constitution, though many have very little familiarity with it. There’s many more amendments than just their favorite, #2.
1/ Thread #Constitution #DemsWork4USA
We have 3 Branches of Government:
1. Legislative: makes laws; Article 1
2. Executive: enforces laws; Article 2
3. Judicial: interprets laws; Article 3
2/ #backtoschool #Constitution
When the Constitution was written there were two entrenched factions. Federalists: supported the Constitution; wanted a strong central government,;  Madison, Hamilton, and Jay wrote Federalist Papers trying to get the public to support the Constitution.

#BackToSchool#Filibuster” is a funny word. It rolls off the tongue surprisingly well for a blocking tactic! Its history is longer than you’d think.
Here’s a look at the filibuster, how it works and the current political firestorm over it.
apnews.com/article/donald…
1/20
WHAT’S A FILIBUSTER?
Unlike the House, the Senate places few constraints on lawmakers’ right to speak.
Senators can easily use the chamber’s rules to hinder or block votes. Collectively these procedural delays are called #filibusters. 2/20
Senate records say the term began appearing in the mid-19th century. The word comes from a Dutch term for “freebooter” and the Spanish “filibusteros” that were used to describe pirates. 3/20 #Filibuster #Pirates

#BackToSchool With all the investigations & talk about Congressional Committees, it’s important to review some history & understand the impact CC’s have had in the past? Why is it so much harder to get accountability today? (Hint: Think elephant)

Conducting investigations is one of the most public activities in which congressional committees engage. 2/13 #JusticeMatters #investigation #accountability #TheBigLie #demswork4usa
During the Progressive Era of the 1890s through 1920s, members could gain the attention of muckraking journalists by holding investigative
hearings to expose corruption in business and government. 3/13 #Corruption #accountability #Congress #TheBigLie

#BackToSchool With all the investigations and coverage of House/Senate Committees, it’s important to review how it all works, how it’s structured & what it all means. What do Congressional Committees do? How are members selected?

In 1885, Woodrow Wilson famously observed, “Congress in session is Congress on public exhibition, whilst Congress in its committee-rooms is Congress at work” (Wilson, 1885). This statement is no less true today. 2/18 #demswork4usa #Congress
Committees are the lifeblood of Congress. They develop legislation, oversee executive agencies and programs, and conduct investigations.
There are different types of committees that are responsible for particular aspects of congressional work. 3/18 #demswork4usa #Congress

2. Make no mistake - there is a grassroots army, and they are uniquely positioned to assess candidates and address gaps in the party infrastructure. Our goal is to provide a framework to leverage and maximize the power of on the ground activists - and translate it into wins.
3. We utilize a "grassroots up", multi-state, multi-cycle and longitudinal strategy to channel grassroots support toward candidates that will result in winning seats, retaining seats and building the bench. This is all critical to passing policy at the state and federal level.

1. Ok, Real Talk. Pragmatism isn’t the same as Centrism. Pragmatism is playing out the string, carefully considering the outcomes and playing the long game. Vetting candidates, policies and strategies is CRITICAL, not divisive.
2. I’m tired of hearing 2020 placed in the misguided construct of targeting swing voters vs. the base in terms of center and far left lanes. Our base is WOC. The nominee must have their support to win and they’re not generally far left voters. For good reason.
3. WOC are the most vulnerable. The risk to them is higher if we fail. We all need to vote with our base in mind, and we cannot let them down. Sure, I want big, structural change, but I’m very concerned about empty promises or shortsightedness.

Within weeks of the Orlando nightclub shooting, Sen. Tom Udall (D-NM) participated in a sit-in at the House to demand votes on gun control legislation, saying, "We owe it to the LGBT community & all families harmed by gun violence to keep terror suspects from obtaining guns."
Since he was first elected to Congress in 1998, Sen. Udall has taken a leadership role on a wide array of environmental issues, receiving a lifetime score of 96% from the League of Conservation Voters.

1. I am one of a majority of women in America. Yes, I am angry. And disgusted. And fearful over the direction of our country. But, I am far from powerless and with my sisters I make this pledge:
2. I am not ok with cruelly caging children, tearing them from their parents with no plan for reunification. I am not ok with creating orphans as a matter of government policy. I refuse to accept traumatizing children as an act of deterrence against immigration.
3. I am not ok with sitting by in denial while our planet faces certain peril and our children face uncertain futures for small economic gains from blind deregulation. We should be leading the world in our quest to stop climate change and protecting our precarious environment.
