đŸ§” I spent a couple days last week in Benton County, just west of Linn County, where people are still reeling from the #derecho.

If you thought Cedar Rapids was livid about lack of media coverage, let me tell you...I’m sorry I wasn’t there sooner.

Driving thru Benton County, in some areas it seemed nearly every farm was significantly damaged, horizon dotted by blue tarps, shattered trees, crumpled grain bins, flattened corn. And that’s after a solid two weeks of Herculean cleanup efforts.

As Steve Meyer, head off Benton County Emergency Management Commission told me, the devastation is “numbing”.

At least with a tornado you drive in & out of the damage area, he says. With the #IowaDerecho ‘it just never ends’.

Here's a little story about a hero named Marty who stopped by the side of the road this morning as I was wondering aimlessly about picking up sticks and hand sawing what little a could of our disastrous front yard. (We lost a two giant trees, a hackberry and a box elder) 1/ Image
I was in a pretty foul mood because I got up at 4:30 AM or so and had a small confrontation with some guys from Midamerican. Then a big old box truck from the Johnson County Emergency management team drove by and asked if I needed any water or ice. 2/
I asked them where the hell they had been when we needed that stuff on Tuesday and walked away from them. (I am sort of an asshole if you haven't noticed.) Then a young man in a bronco pulled up and asked if I needed any help. 3/

#Derecho2020 thread - NERD EDITION - I will eschew my bona fides as an Iowan and get right to it:

There is nothing precluding Governor Reynolds asking for a federal disaster declaration like, yesterday. Here is why:
There is a provision (Chet Culver used it during the 2008 floods) that let's one cut through the horsepucky (if you will) and ask for immediate federal disaster declaration.
A state must request a declaration - unless falls under the purview of Feds - like was done with COVID (sort of). Culver asked and 48 hours later (or less?) Bush said yep!

Now.

People are hard at work repairing this apartment complex this morning after the #derecho.

I think this neighborhood is technically over the line in Marion city limits, but on the NE side of Cedar Rapids.

Lots of work to be done in Cedar Rapids and Marion. This is Amar Drive SE. #IowaDerecho #IowaStorms
I can’t get over what the #derecho2020 did to some of these trees.
Along Amar Drive SE.

The news and images from Iowa after this week's storms are devastating. Communities like Cedar Rapids were so welcoming to us through the last year, and now we can all show support for those who are hurting amid this terrible damage. #Derecho2020
If you're within reach of Iowa and able to help, please consider signing up to volunteer this weekend. The @UnitedWayCI is doing terrific work to help get people the support they need even during this time of social distancing:

Two other groups, @aid_ic and @ASJ_BLM, are focusing their movements on getting food and life-saving supplies directly to Iowans in need.

The perishable food at the 1st Ave Hy-Vee in Cedar Rapids is pretty well picked over this morning, but they’re restocking. #IowaStorms #derecho
As of this morning, phone lines “at all Linn County facilities remain down” per a county release.

I’m getting concerned that the damage from a storm system called “derecho” isn’t getting much national news coverage. THIS MATTERS. Why? Money and help follow news coverage. This isn’t a few trees down and the inconvenience of power out. It’s like a tornado hit whole counties.
We had the winds of a category two hurricane. In Iowa. People are begging for help to refill their oxygen, to lift power lines off their driveways so they can leave their homes and search for food, most of the city of Cedar Rapids cannot dial 911 for help.
When the flood of 2008 hit we led every major network’s evening national newscasts. Meteorologists from the Weather Channel and the main networks walked in waders through our swollen Cedar River.
