THREAD: A lot of chatter on here about tonight’s #DesignatedSurvivor. As White House Cabinet Secretary from 2009-13, I helped select who sat out 7 Obama speeches (#SOTU, joint addresses, inaugurations). Here are some of the factors that went into the decision:

First, the #DesignatedSurvivor has to be in the presidential line of succession. That means one of the 15 secretaries of an executive department. And the person has to be a natural-born citizen (not naturalized), so they’re actually eligible to serve as president.

The second factor is if someone is already traveling outside the D.C. metro area during the speech. That only happened once for us, but even if the potential #DesignatedSurvivor is traveling, they need to be in a secure location during the actual speech.

My hot take on #DesignatedSurvivor scheme is that the President and Vice President should never be in the building together.
The Secretary of Health and Human Services should never be next-in-line if bad shit happens.

Now the issue is that the Vice President is the Senate President. I get that. But we delegate his or her authority on a daily basis. He or she doesn't usually preside in the Senate. And having Pro Temp preside doesn't entirely strip of VP's Senate duties.
The VP presiding for a tie breaker is essential. Same with electoral vote counting.
It's not essential for an annual glorified campaign speech. And I've always thought that continuity of government should be paramount.

Bestes Beispiel für eine Serie, deren Prämisse sich super pitchen lässt, aber kein gutes Fundament für eine Serie legt. Wenn mein Aufhänger der Ausnahmezustand ist, kann ich nur eine Serie draus machen, wenn der Ausnahmezustand nicht gleich wieder vorbei ist. /1
Problem bei #DesignatedSurvivor ist, dass die Welt viel zu schnell viel zu nah an den Normalzustand zurückkehrt. Ab da ist es nur noch ein schlechtes "West Wing". /2
Das passende Gegenbeispiel wäre "The Walking Dead", wo aus gutem Grund niemand mehr über einen Impfstoff redet und auch keiner auf die Idee kommt, doch mal auf eine Insel zu ziehen. /3
