In honor of #SunshineWeek, the #DetentionKills Transparency Initiative
is releasing these recently obtained DHS-OIG offered these records of alleged misconduct and abuse by DHS contractors. You probably don’t have time to read all 547 pages. So we did. 🧵 documentcloud.org/documents/2141…
On page 3, OIG documents receiving a complaint in 2006 regarding the allegations in the litigation LeTisha Tapia’s family brought against $GEO.

Those allegations are shocking, but unsurprising.
@POGOwatchdog’s contractor database has more: contractormisconduct.org/misconduct/256…

OIG appears to have referred the allegations to ICE in early February 2007 and closed the file. Wonder how ICE responded 🤔
In the years that followed, at least three senior ICE officials who would have received this complaint from OIG went on to join $GEO’s board or C-Suite.

On January 25, 2020, Ben Owen died in the Baker County Jail while being imprisoned by ICE. In its mandatory report to Congress, ICE said that agents arrested Ben because he was in the U.S. without authorization. 1/4
This was a lie. Tammy filed a marriage-based green card petition on Ben's behalf before his visa expired. ICE never shared that detail with Congress. Yesterday, Ben's widow Tammy filed notice that she intends to bring suit against the United States for wrongful death. 2/4
We, the #DetentionKills Network calls on @POTUS and @AliMayorkas to bring @ICE into compliance with the law requiring the agency to provide death reports within 30 days of a tragedy. Four people have died whose deaths ICE did not provide reports on since September 2020. 3/4

“Wanted by ICE*”

(Just not badly enough to go to a neutral magistrate and get a warrant because that’s how much we care about the public safety mission we say we serve: We are literally not willing to just go get a warrant for a guy we put on a billboard.)
ICE pretends the Fourth Amendment has nothing to do with public safety. They want the people reading this billboard to be okay in a world where their agents can arrest anyone, anytime, anywhere. Don’t worry, though, just “bad” guys. (And some kids)
A #FOIA I’ve been meaning to do but have to admit to myself I won’t is to seek the Fugitive Operations Worksheet or Field Operation Worksheet for the FugOps teams who are supposed to be looking for guys like this man and then measure them against ICE’s effort to pick a scary face

‼️BIG #DetentionKills news‼️

On May 15, 2017, #DACA holder Jean Jimenez died inside a solitary confinement cell @ ICE's Stewart Detention Ctr in Lumpkin, GA.

Today a federal judge DENIED ICE's attempt to dismiss his family's wrongful death suit, allows the case to proceed.
Jean's mom and step-dad are the first family of someone who died in an ICE prison under this regime to file a wrongful death lawsuit and defeat the government's effort to throw it out of court outright.

Here are some key facts from today's decision: documentcloud.org/documents/7212…
A statement from Jean's family and #DetentionKills partners will be coming soon. But for now, we are overjoyed that the American justice system has determined we can move forward in our quest to obtain #JusticeforJean and to #FreeThemAll

BREAKING: Adelanto Detention Center has now a #COVID19 outbreak. We heard yesterday that 32 ppl were in quarantine by noon. @ahilan_toolong & the @aclu team confirmed 38 case as of last night. This is after 300 new arrests were made by ICE in LA the last 50 days. Connect the dots
This is so heartbreaking.

ICE has refused to release ppl with disabilities and chronic medical conditions AND without criminal record.

ICE has refused to release or test ppl with symptoms claiming they do not meet the CDC requirements for testing.
ICE continues to arrest and transfer ppl to ADC from both CBP and state prisons without little protocols for monitoring ppl.

Medical staff are abusive to ppl who complain or make repeated sick calls.

Advocates are concerned, however, that the true death toll of #COVID19 in ICE prisons is under-counted due to lack of information regarding the fate of people exposed to #COVID19 in detention and then released.

#FOIAFriday

Our #DetentionKills network published #FOIA records from ICE that prove the government and its auditors have failed to accurately report and document attempts by people in custody to commit suicide in ICE jails.

Suicide is the leading cause of death in ICE custody
Here’s a thread on those docs, and what they mean:

Gotta admit: it’s deflating to lay all this out On Here and have the analysis get fewer impressions than snarky GIFs about the Portland Trailblazers I periodically drop into @MattArchambeau1’s feed on @YakimaAbogado’s behalf.

Another human caged by ICE appears to have ended his life while in solitary confinement at a for-profit migrant prison, this time in Louisiana.

This would be the second known in-custody death of the fiscal year, with more than two dozen occurring since the regime took power.
Worth noting that the existence of this facility for ICE imprisonment itself is in direct violation of the appropriations authority Congress gave to ICE when it funded detention operations.

It’s worth asking ourselves what to call prison camps we send people to where they’ve committed no crime, received no due process, and have not been shown to present a flight risk, knowing some number of them will die, and thousands more will suffer

26 months.

4 lives over.

Today’s so hard for so many who’ve been screaming at the top of their lungs, lifting up well-documented, unrebutted, damning first-person accounts of the inhumanity of for-profit migrant imprisonment inside ICE’s Stewart facility in Lumpkin, Georgia.
If they’d listened to voices, processed them respectfully, and done their own discernment, the inescapable conclusion would be that Stewart is no place fit for human beings. Not yesterday, not today. Not ever.

Officials and execs see the same docs we’ve gotten and sat silent.
Unless Stewart is closed, more will suffer. More will give up. And more will die.

Rest in Power, Pedro, Efrain, Yulio, and Jean.
