A #thread about some #myths of #languages and #scripts (of #India): 🧵(I wrote in Kannada earlier)
Every language including #Sanskrit comes in spoken form first & later in written form. Most languages are dated by the earliest time when a written record for them is found. 1/17
#Samskrta can be considered an exception, where we have record of the spoken word before we see its written form. This is because the #Vedas were preserved in a speech form for millennia before being written down. In case of other languages, this is not so. 2/17
For ex: First written record of #Kannada date to 2-3rd C CE. But this does not prove Kannada did'nt exist prior to 2nd CE. It is better to inferwriting was introduced/adapted to Kannada then. In fact we see how the script used to write Prakrit in as adapted to write Kannada 3/17

India as known to #Panini ಪುಸ್ತಕವನ್ನು ಓದಬಹುದು.

On August 22 1907, an Indian woman posed quite a challenge to the British by hoisting the first version of the #IndianFlag abroad.

This woman was Bhikaiji Cama, a prominent figure within the Indian Independence Movement.

A Thread 🧵
The flag was hoisted at the Seventh International Socialist Congress in Stuttgart, Germany as a way to create an atmosphere in support of the Independence Movement.
Bhikaiji Rustom Cama was born on September 24, 1861 to an affluent Parsi family from Bombay.

She was known to be quite altruistic having treated patients during the outbreak of the bubonic plague in Bombay in 1896.

Of the approximately lakh (100,000) #inscriptions found in India, 85,000 are in tamiZ & kannaDa. Let that sink in

These were written in the respective #tamiz and #kannaDa scripts (as they were through the 2000 year history). Not in #Nagari variants.

1/6
Many Southeast Asian scripts are derived from #kadamba-pallava script, the early kannaDa-Telugu script. This South Indian script had international reach

Nagari/ other North Indian scripts clearly did not have the reach or prestige outside India as the kadamba-pallava script

2/6
#Nandinagari was used mainly in karNATaka for #samskRta inscriptions and writing, “in addition” to kannaDa script. Bulk of samskRta manuscripts are in kannaDa script. Same with samskRta inscriptions.

#tigaLAri script has also been used on some inscriptions and manuscripts

📖 This piece in @dawn_com intrigued me. What could it mean to #translate #Premchand into #Urdu? #اردو #हिंदी 1/n

Premchand’s last unfinished novel #Mangalsutra can be read here in its #Devanagari version. #मंगलसूत्र 2/n

Dr Hasan Manzar’s “translation” can be found on @Rekhta. Two editions are available. This one 👇🏼 (New Delhi: Modern Publishing House, 2002) I found had a better print quality. 3/n

1. Next 21 tweets on #Sikh tradition's relationship with different languages & scripts in Indic core & extended MidEast/Mongol/Tibet/E.Asian family.

What were the cultural undercurrents of the first Sikh movement towards Indicization?

What derailed this?

What about the future?
2. #Sikh Guru Angad ji pioneered the re-introduction of Indic script in Punjab. Rolled back imposition of modified-Arabic script.

#Gurmukhi is derived from Sharada script of #Kashmiri Hindus. Related to far flung Tocharian script. Is only surviving member of that script-family.
3. #Sindhis, Hindus from #NWFP & Hinglaaj (present-day #Balochistan), + today's #Kashmiri Hindus' Indic scripts have lost currency. Most now use modified-Arabic script.

These groups should consider adopting #Gurmukhi as script for their languages as they reclaim their identity.
