As the frequency of data breaches increases, the threat to your data becomes more real every day — even if you've done your threat modelling & implemented digital security hygiene.

What can you do in the aftermath of a data breach? #CybersecCharcha ⬇️ 1/n
internetfreedom.in/6-cybersec-cha…
First things first, confirm the breach and don't fall for rumours on Twitter! Verify the news from 3-4 trusted sources.

Beware of scammers moonlighting as company reps & try to gather more information. Speak to the company via official channels if you have to! #databreach 2/n
Next: Change your passwords if your credentials were leaked. Password tips:

➡️ DO NOT repeat the same passwords everywhere
➡️ DO NOT include Personally Identifiable Information (like birthdates, parents' names etc) — this will make them easy to crack.
➡️ DO enable 2FA! 3/n

There are some simple steps you can (and should!) take to up your #DigitalSecurity game. We might sound like a broken record, but:

🕸 Set up 2 Factor Authentication
🕸 Create strong passwords
🕸 Use a password manager
🕸 Stay alert for phishing scams!

More details in 🧵 👇🏽 2/n
First, on passwords:

✅ Use unique passwords for each account
❌ Don’t use: DOB, partner/parent’s names or any info easily available in the public domain.
✅ Aim for at least 15 characters & a mix of letters, numbers + symbols.
✅ Use passphrases: they are harder to crack. 3/n White background. Comic in https://xkcd.com/936/ Our text:

#Pegasus spyware, which transforms a cellphone into a mobile surveillance hub, could have been deployed against a range of journalists and civil society actors in Mexico, KSA, Bahrain, Morocco, Togo, Israel, US, and UAE.

How to protect yourself? [Thread]
cpj.org/2018/10/cpj-sa…
#Pegasus gives the attacker the ability to monitor, record & collect existing & future data from the phone. This includes calls and information from messaging applications and real-time location data. The spyware is able to remotely activate the camera and microphone.
@citizenlab
Pegasus is designed to be installed on phones running iOS, Android, and BlackBerry OS without alerting the target to its presence. Journalists will likely only know if their phone has been infected if the device is inspected by a tech expert.
