.@jsrailton talking about how social media platforms (both foreign and domestic) collect so much personal data that very soon, people running for political office will have had data from their whole lives collected. That poses a huge threat. #DigitalSherlocks
UK Cabinet Office's Paula Edwards on countering disinformation narratives: “You have to tell the truth, but it has to be the truth well told.” #DigitalSherlocks
The best part of the #DigitalSherlocks conference put on by the @AtlanticCouncil I just attended was meeting fellow attendees. All of them started working on this issue because they realized they had skills and abilities they could bring to the disinformation fight. Inspiring!

Day 2 of #DigitalSherlocks starting off with an incredible talk from @iyad_elbaghdadi who is in hiding because the Saudi government is targeting him. He’s talking about covering disinformation/propaganda by authoritarian regimes.
.@iyad_elbaghdadi On covering disinformation by authoritarian regimes: “You can have all the resources in the world and still not be smart. Sometimes these regimes over complicate the [propaganda] story and people will tune it out.” #DigitalSherlocks
A week before Jamal Khashoggi’s murder, he talked to @iyad_elbaghdadi about starting an organization to expose propaganda from authoritarian regimes. Iyad says it gives him comfort that Khashoggi’s murder highlighted Saudi’s propaganda efforts. #DigitalSherlocks

Facebook's @ngleicher, who coordinates the company's work to detect & disrupt information operations on the platform, says such information operations are defined as "any coordinated effort to manipulate or corrupt public debate to achieve a strategic goal." #DigitalSherlocks 1/
Why does @ngleicher prefer to talk about "information operations" rather than "disinformation"? He says "The vast majority of content we see isn't provably false… Information operations speaks to this broader notion of behavior." #DigitalSherlocks 2/
"More & more… it's getting hard to tell whether it's a gov't or non-gov't, whether the operation is foreign or domestic," says @ngleicher. "When we take an enforcement action it's very important we do not make decisions based on who is behind an operation." #DigitalSherlocks 3/

Excited to be with my fellow #digitalsherlocks this week to talk all things OSINT and disinformation!
Damon Wilson: “We’re in the fight of our generation. Progress is not inevitable...our adversaries are keenly aware...The stakes are too high to be ambivalent...It’s not business as usual.” #DigitalSherlocks
.@benimmo on the beauty of modern day OSINT and the Dutch publicly releasing copies of GRU agent’s taxi receipts last year: “Even the top spies... the James Bonds of the world have to get receipts.” Truth. #DigitalSherlocks

We’re still looking for this place in Iran. We found some clues that convicted fugitive was in Teheran. And Kish. Now @bellingcat @Timmi_Allen made from Instagram-video this still image. Does anyone recognize where this is? (2/2) #osint #digitasherlock #digitalsherlocks
Technically, this place can be ANYWHERE in the world. So look at details on the photo.
I am starting to doubt Iran as country of origin. Look at the bin. I could't find bins with that color in Iran. Maybe I am wrong. But if not, does anyone recognise this bin color in his own country? (5/5)

#MAGABomber Thread - I've been digging through the bombers tweets, seeing what info can be gleaned from them, they really tell a story:
First we can link the van filmed being searched earlier with the social media account. After the van was filmed, @thereal_mo01 (the hero of this story) shared photographs showing close ups of the van, showing more details. This proves essential #MAGABomber
Next you go to the bombers page. First thing you do is click on the top tweet, and see he's no fan of at least two of the targets of the bombs. But he's also replying to a tweet, so let's look at that next.

Aircraft spotters working with Hala Systems spotted
multiple Hips from the Vehicles School helicopter base in Hama. Hips
were sighted by different spotters on a route towards Haas underground
hospital after that, then around the area Haas hospital is in just
before it was bombed.
A useful video from Idlib Media Center, giving a detailed look at the entrance area and how badly damaged it was. Some will (and already are) claiming it was an Al-Qaeda bunker or something. Looks like a hospital to me.
So here's a geolocation challenge for you #digitalsherlocks, these two photographs may show the moment Haas hospital was bombed, but can they be geolocated?

Thread - Just spent a great week running a @bellingcat workshop, as usual we ended with two days of participant led investigations, including the investigation of this video claiming to show US strikes on Syria back in April
There’s a number of details visible, most obvious being the large pylon and partly finished roof top.
First we decided to see if we could find any maps of the pylons in Syria, but what there was left a lot to be desired, but it was a start, and we could see Damascus had multiple lines of pylons running through it.

Thread on Sputnik, and some of the ways it fulfils its official task of "securing the national interests of the Russian Federation in the information sphere."

Yep, that's a quote.

The company which services Sputnik in the US, RIA Global, registered as a "foreign agent" under FARA.

It says its principal is the Rossiya Segodnya agency, and claims RS "acts completely independently based on its editorial policies."

Really?
Here's a useful document: the Rossiya Segodnya charter, which defines, as one of RS' main goals, "securing the national interests of the Russian Federation in the information sphere."

Acts completely independently?...
