(1/9) Iโ€™ve seen a lot of op-eds about how awful it is that #CCS was included in the #IRA. Most lack nuance, because they havenโ€™t clocked that the #energytransition isnโ€™t just about the power sector anymore. Sorry #energytwitter. So, a ๐Ÿงต on why carbon capture still has a place.
(2/9) First, I get this. I was a huge #CCS skeptic. Two things changed my mind: modelling pathways to #netzero for materials with my @BloombergNEF team, and the #BNEFNEO team's carbon budgets for industry. Sobering work that taught me a lot.
(3/9) Some industries just canโ€™t do without CCS. Process emissions are just as harmful as combustion. And weโ€™re past the point where abatement of emissions is enough. That means removals, which means #DirectAirCapture.

1/ Two weeks ago I highlighted the difference between carbon emission reduction and removal projects.

The idea of #CarbonReduction is to pay others to reduce emissions in your place. But your output remains in the system. One plus zero.
2/ #CarbonRemoval on the other hand scrubs carbon directly from the atmosphere. Plus one, minus one.

But technically, the #carbonmarket makes no difference. A ton is a ton.
