I FINALLY found the "discovery math" in the Alberta math curriculum...in 1936!
Alberta has always had a progressive curriculum...until the #UCP destroyed it for 100% ideological purposes

A 🧵:
The social studies outcomes are very colonialist and not desirable...but interesting to see that no one was bothered about the word "settler" in 1936 as seen in these sample sentences for reading instruction.

One year, I had a grade 3 student in PE who was outgoing & loved to share her ideas & stories. When she came into grade six she was quiet & hid her face. She always wore her coat & would barely speak. When she did, it was almost inaudible. I was startled by this stark change. 🧵
I started working with mom right away, to figure out what went awry and why this girl was acting so differently. Mom said she became very concerned with her clothes over the summer and would stress about what to wear each day. 🧵
After doctor visits, conversations and repeated messages of love it was discovered that she was “counting calories” and eating less than half of what would be recommended for a child her age. The doctor, a counsellor and mom worked with her and slowly she began eating more. 🧵

This is a curriculum announcement! A reminder that our current (strong) curriculum was developed over about 35 years of PC rule. The draft that was thrown away was developed under the PC and NDP. Calling it the "NDP curriculum" is simply not accurate. #AbLeg #ditchthedraft
In fact, our current curriculum is followed by many schools in other countries. That is yet another reminder of the strength of our education system. Put that together with the MacKinnon Report that shows K-12 education costs in AB are low and we have the deal of deals. #AbLeg
Only BC is lower cost (mainly because BC doesn't support private schools or the same level of busing). We had (historically) strong curriculum development process here. The process we had has been totally abandoned now. And, instead the draft is run up to cabinet every other week

🧵 If Kenney can put forward a Referendum on equalization at #ableg, #epsb can request referendum on:

1) education equalization (the weighted moving average) &
2) the draft K-6 curriculum.

Edmonton City Council can add the questions to #yegvote. I'll propose this tomorrow.
We’re not asking for a special deal, just a fair deal. Jason Kenney's equalization program is not fair for Children.

Despite their promise to maintain or increase funding for education, they have instead introduced a new formula that punishes growing Edmonton Schools.
We expect 2700 new students next year without one additional dollar to educate them.

School boards across Alberta have refused to pilot the draft K-6 curriculum, but the Minister remains intent on implementation.

Edmontonians will finally have the opportunity to be heard.
